Christmas Break Project

Hey all,
I thought I would just fill you guys in about the details of a project I plan on starting/completing over Christmas break. Cadayle, my 1year 8 month old corn is going to be a bit too big for her 20g long enclosure soon (okay not REALLY but hey I need an excuse to build something) so I am going to be building a 4' x 2.5' x 2' enclosure for her.

I'm not sure what base materials I will use yet, I still have to head down to home depot and check that out. Anyone know of any laminated particle board type materials (kinda like melamime I guess) that's cheap?

I'm going to have a vent on the left and right side, and 6 3" circular vents on the top. There will be two holes drilled on the other side of the top and covered with mesh for lights to be put over.

The bottom will have an area cut out in which i will place a plexiglass rectangle, which is what the UTH will go on to.

I am going to put in a background using this method. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RlZqSVIn0ug

A question on that. I'm pretty sure concrete wouldn't pose any health problems towards snakes, but she says she uses Drylock for it, which is a latex masonry waterproofer. Anyone know if that would be detrimental? If so, would simply sealing it with acrylic sealer do the job?

I then plan to make hides, logs and such using this method http://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-fake-rock-cavebasking-spot-for-a-reptile-c/

I'll then put a plexiglass rectangle on the front that will be attatched to the front bottom with a hinge, and be secured at the front top with swiveling latches.

Well that's all I can think of that's going into it off the top of my head. My dad hinted that I'm getting a 100 dollar gift card to home depot as my Christmas present, and I can pay for the rest out of my own pocket.

I'll be sure to post final pictures/maybe progression pics .

Thanks,
--Mike M.

Mike it really does sound like a great project, please to a whole progression thread of the viv and cave with all the how to's in the DIY section as many people would love to see it, myself included!!! Oh, and let us know how hard it was to do, how time consuming and approx. how much it cost. Please.

K, will be sure to. I'm heading over to home depot in the next couple days to see how much everything is gonna cost.

Check the prices of a 3/4" smooth finish plywood to other material you might want to use. I use it on my viv. Painted it and seal it with a water base sealer and I have no problem what so ever with it.
