HELLO EVERYONE!!!

yes that type of rheo. turns off when temp. is reached(I personally have this type hooked to 2 of my tanks)If its 72 on 1 side & 83 on the other he should be fine. They thermo regulate so if he gets cold he can go to the warm end. Mine is typically at the same temp. on cool end and my baby spends more time on cool end then warm end unless digesting.

Ok understood but my main question is how do I know if he does get cold?

Like what is a sign so I know its not working or its to cold and I need to warm him up

usually if they are to cold they get real listless and don't move much even during the night and would most likely refuse meals(they can refuse meals and hide if they are going to shed also). I haven't much experience in a snake being cold other then when I put mine down for the winter(I'm breeding this year).

I put mine in the basement and kept them at 50 degrees to get ready for breeding.
If you want a good book go to Kathy Love's website www.cornutopia.com and get her book on corn snakes. Its probably the best one out there.

he doesn't need artificial light at night or during the day. Some people use lights that don't give off heat for viewing at night but I don't know what kind.

Hey guys so as stated before hooked up my UTH

After playing with him yesterday put him back in the tank and he has not really moved from the spot he went to last night at around 4 o clock and im kind of worried the temp says 82.5 and the temp guage thats on the glass says 72 on the temp on hot and 68 on the cool (which it is the crappy thermometer thats on the glass so its reading air)

Im kind of worried is this ok?

I mean he is my first but when I had the heat lamp up he moved more....

ok so anyway got him out to play and put the electronic thermometer just in his tank and its dropped to 72 and still dropping kind of worried waiting on some good advice

Don't worry too much about ambient air temps.

The main temp to worry about is the temp of the glass right above the UTH. This is where your cornsnake will generally lay on/near particularly when it digests. You want it to be in the low/mid 80's.

The thermometers you have affixed to the glass on the sides of the tanks are only taking ambient air temps. The ambient air in my tanks are the same as the room temperature in my house...which generally runs 70-74 depending on the time of year. When you had the heat lamp up and it moved more it may have been because he was uncomfortable, and seeking alternate places to hide. My cornsnakes don't move all that much...they find a place they like and they lay there. That's what they do. I usually only see them moving when it comes close to feeding time. They also move more at evening/night, not during the day.

I just wanted to say I love all your questions. I will be in the same boat as of tomorrow! How is he doing?

Haha thanks I ask a lot of questions because I like to be 100% on something and know that is it ok (that way if I give advice to someone I know Im right)

Thanks for asking I will get pics if you would like!

he is doing GREAT, after the first time I played with him I have no fears of being bitten he is a very good snake. He has never looked at me or made any actions for me to believe he would bite me. He loves to roam and look. He is pretty calm in my hands when playing with him.

He is up to two pinkies a day and he loves it lol.

He is getting bigger and stronger every day. He made it up the entire tank the other day and touched the top he looked so proud of himself!!

One of the biggest fears I had was washing his tank (the first time and the month mark is coming up). Using bleach and soap scared me because I didnt want to hurt him.

I followed the guidelines for how much bleach and soap and then made very sure I rinsed the tank.....A LOT.... A LOT lol and he seems fine so think I did a good job.

I know this sounds dumb but I think he can hear me or sense how I feel about him. We played peek a bo this morning I walked over said hi he poked his head up out of his coconut (have pics) and then I moved over so he could not see me then looked back he was back in his coconut and then peeked up at me lol it was great.

So starting off being afraid of snakes I now LOVE the little guy and my gf couldnt be happier that I like him to!

also forgot to mention dont be afraid when you reach down and pick him up out of his tank but do not come in from the front and dont back him into a corner.

just figured id throw that out their. Everyone said they would rather run then bite you which I was skeptical at first but they are right.

Now 2 out of 3 times I put my hand in his tank he comes over to me I like it =P
