Too many to choose from!!
Hey guys my spring break starts Monday, so what better way to spend it than herping out some new spots. I was going to go back to NC but I figured whats 3 more hours for some warmer weather. So I plan on heading to Congaree Swamp National Monument, SC which is right near Hopkins SC. I didn't know if anyone had any insight on this area, what to look out for, what to expect ect. Ill be there for close to four days, I'm pretty stoked.

It might be a little cool there...but you never know. Walk the boardwalk at the Monument...you'll see lots of water snakes and if you get lucky maybe a cottonmouth. There are also alligators in some of the small ponds/lakes. I've only found one canebrake there and it was on the road going into the campground! If you do the back country trails you'll see a lot of stuff too...ratsnakes, kings, water snakes, etc.... But it all depends on weather...still a little cold. You may have more luck going closer to the coast.

All in all it was too early and a little cool. Regardless it was a great time and we did find some stuff, I will try and put some pictures up soon.

I'm in north coastal SC. I work outdoors in a large area of wetlands. So far this year I have not even seen a black racer out yet. They are usually the first to emerge. Their color allows them to absorb radiant heat more readily. I did find a corn snake on the road I live on last Friday evening. Glad to say it was not a DOR! Things are slow starting this year for sure following one of the coldest winters I can recall in my 49 years here. My spotted turtles are out sunning this afternoon. No sign of my box turtles yet. It won't be much longer, though.

We are going on vacation to Ocean Isle Beach, NC in April. We plan on doing a lil herping ourselves. I hope we have good luck! We'll see.

If you are going to Ocean Isle I highly recommend checking out Green Swamp. It's a large nature preserve just a few miles north of Supply, NC on Hwy 211. It's no more than 30 minutes from Ocean Isle. Lots of neat stuff there including several species of carnivorous plants. Plenty of snakes, too. By the time you come down warmer temps should have the reptiles out in force. Good Luck!

THANKS

Thank you for the info. We will def check it out. My husbands dad lives down in OIB so we go at least 2 times a year. Once in Spring and once in Fall. But this is the first time we are gonna have quite a bit of time to do some herping. I hope to get some awesome pics! I can't wait. Thanks again!
