Long story short, Danielle's university, and my old one, NC State, found a new mascot this season.

She is a Timber x Alaskan Malamute, and overflowing with cuteness

Indeed she is canine cuteness personified, but doesn't look very wolfish, she looks more fluff Malamute-ish. Don't get me wrong, Mals are GREAT dogs. Beautiful, smart, self-willed, eat anything, Arctic doggie wonderfulness in a large size.

She looks very Mal, but I can see some nice wolf features too, most notably paws.

By Timber x Alaskan Malamute do you mean she's a wolfdog? Because it says in the link "tamaskan" which is a breed of dog (not a hybrid) meant to look as wolfish as possible. I LOVE THEM. <3

I love the look of them, but I am seriously worried about what most people would think of a "wolf" living next door. This breed may have some major hurdles to overcome to convince Joe Blow on the street that these are completely pure domesticated dogs.

NO true wolf hybrid is %100 domesticated dog... and the higher the wolf, the less "domestic" they are... They can be wonderful companions (i can't quite call them "pets") in the right hands but they're definitely not your average dog :)

That girl is cute as all get out though and I see some wolfyness in there. :)

I do not think she's a hybrid, if he is a tamaskan then she is DEFINITELY not a hybrid. The first post has me confused. The poster says TiberXMalamute, but the facebook page says tamaskan. O__o

The link to the Tamaskan Wolfdog breed states they are not wolf hybrids. I was speaking strictly about a domestic dog breed being designed to look like wolves and what the average person would think, not knowing they aren't hybrids. Staffordshire terriers aren't pit bulls, but most people wouldn't know that by looking at them. It's merely an observation. Like we in the snake biz know that big snakes aren't going to eat children, but convince your non-herp neighbor of that. There can be quite a bit of public fear to overcome developing a breed to look like a wild animal.

And there is no way of knowing the actual DNA percentage a wolf hybrid carries of either wolf or dog. It can look like a shepherd but still be predominantly genetically wolf. It can look like a wolf and have more dog DNA. Unless someone has their hybrid's DNA analysed, its assumed they are more like what they look like, which may not be the case.

She's a beauty, and she looks like some Tamaskans that I photographed at a large dog show in January. I fell in love with the looks of them, then. Promptly put that breed on the "someday" list :).

Here's a photo of one I took at the Rose City Classic Dog Show in January (the breed club is campaigning for exposure and eventual acceptance into the AKC). For a dog with no wolf in it, they sure did a good job of getting the wolfie look down! However, compare it to the mascot dog, and you'll see that the club probably has a ways to go with their breed standards. There appears to be a lot of variation at the moment:

Brandon says he is a reptile person not a dog person so how was he supposed to know it wasn't a wolf hybrid! lolz
