new tank setup

Lol....you'll be ok...when I first got the UTH I didn't have anything to regulate the heat or a proper thermometer. I felt the top of the glass with my hand all the time and it didn't feel too hot. But it was still warm so I figured it couldn't hurt him. Plus he was never on that side anyways. Then I realized, wait, if my body temp is 98.6 degrees...and this is warmer then my hand, then something is not right. So let me go get a digital thermometer w/ the probe. I only used the stick on one. So I went and got the zoo med one for $7, and OMG it was reading like 119 degrees! So I attempted to pick up the rheostat and NO ONE in the surrounding pet stores had one. So I asked what I could use until then and one of the ppl on these forums (Fatman608) stated use a lamp dimmer from Home Depot. It's been working great ever since I never went and got the rheostat.
 
lucky you! lol I wish i could send thi sback to petmountain but it pobably isn't worth th ehassle. It was only 15 bucks. ohwell trial and error I guess. Thanks for the info!
 
You could always sell it on Ebay....? Or if you have the package, take it to a petco or petsmart and say "hey, I bought this a couple weeks ago and its not working but I don't have a receipt. Can I exchange it for something else?"
 
lol yeah thats true... I get mine shipped to me on wednesday morning it will be here. I can't wait. I ordered a Baby snow female thats het for motley ..haha what ever that means :p
 
Snows are pretty....I have no idea what "hets" mean, even though I've heard the term NUMEROUS times on this site. Motely means that it has a pattern that looks like blotches instead of saddles...When I first picked up Dallas, I had him for 4 months and I wanted another snake (total newbie, new nothing) and the guy from the shop said I could co-hab him with another snake if they were around the same age and size. Well I brought the motley snow home and Dallas freaked out, had a panic attack (seriously) so I had to take the Snow back :( but I didn't want to stress out Dallas and at the time I didn't really want to purchase another set up. But now....I'm ready for more...I'm either going to pick up a frosted Corn (so pretty) which is a hybrid and then eventually pick up a albino Cali King snake. Probably between April & June...

By the time I drove to one close to me it would be just a cheap to get it shipped. And I mean I put like legs under my tank so it stand about 2 inches off its stand and I put stuff under the uth or take stuff away to make it higher and lower. I would all ready have something but my local pet store keeps telling me there gonna get me a thermostat in every time I go in for mice but I am going to give up on them
 
ok I went to homedepot picked up the dimmer switch and now I am playing the adjusting game lol. hopefully i can get this down to about 85 by wednesday gets here.
