My little section of road produced results.....

....... this morning ! (it's going to be a good day).

Made a quick trip around the swamps near where I work this morning to
see if anything was out. I didn't see anything on the gravel road part
where I find most of the snakes, BUT . . . right before I got to an intersection
where the local water treatment plant is (asphalt road). I saw what I
thought was a DOR in the other lane. So I made a quick turn around at
the stop sign and headed back to see what breed of snake it was. Pulled
up right behind it, and realized this wasn't a DOR ! I grabbed my digital
camera and snapped off this picture. I was going to zoom in for a closer
shot and %#**#, my camera batteries went dead ! I kind of said something
dirty, and stomped my foot lighty and this bad boy took off for the tall
grass cover on the side of the road and was GONE. . But at least I have
one good shot of a wild Copperhead here in Columbia. Second one I've seen
in a week, but the first time, I didn't have my camera with me, and the
one I saw got into the grass befor I got a close look at him. . . saw
it flash through the weeds enough to tell what it was.

Beautiful! Good herping!

Thanx. . . I haven't done an "official" herping trip out there just yet, but
it's coming real soon ! . .this is a small stretch of road near where I work
and over the last three years, I've seen all kinds of snakes out there in
the daytime. Mostly Black Racers and Black Rats, but seen some DOR
Garters, Eastern Kings, and a juvenal Rattlesnake. . . .This year has been
a banner year for spotting them. Until this week, I haven't seen any
Copperheads in the wild here in Columbia, but have seen two so far
within a week now. I'm going to get out there and spend a couple of hours
looking around shortly after sundown. With the pic this morning, I'm
thinking this weekend is going to be my first offical herping trip !!

:)

Heck, I'm glad I didn't see copperheads when I was in Columbia! grats though!

Moved down here from the Greenville area nine years ago, and hadn't
seen a Copperhead wild here until this past week. Seen two within
the last 5-6 days now ! I used to see them all the time in the Upstate
but mainly around ponds or the edge of the woods. This one was no
where near any water and in a fairly high traffic area on that road, being
it was right in front of the Water Treatment Facility. He's lucky he wasn't
flattened.

What a great way to find a copperhead! I know wouldn't be able to keep from getting some close-ups if I found one on a road.
I hope you can see more, sounds like you moved to a promising area. I did the opposite. I lived in VA Beach area for a while and saw quite a few. I moved a few hours north and more urban and I've seen a grand total of 4 in 20 years here.
They're our most beautiful snake. Photos are pretty but they just can't capture the colors like seeing one for real.

Agreed. . .I'll tell you something else too. I've seen literally 100s of
Copperheads in displays (zoo, Serpentarium, wildlife stations etc...) and
they're cool to look at. Same way with the dozens of other display
caught reptiles, BUT there is absolutely nothing that gives you more
excitment than seeing one of them wild ! Copperheads or beautiful snakes
and are VERY misunderstood. I've heard my entire life the phrase
"meaner than a copperhead snake" . . . . These things are not aggressive, and
the venom is not very toxic (although I wouldn't want to be on the
business end of those if they did strike), yet people seem to believe they
are just plain Mean and overly aggressive. All I did was gesture hard and
made a flintching move when I realized my camera was drained, and this
snake took off fast for cover. Not what you'd call "MEAN" if you ask me.
