Are they just not popular? I always had garters as a kid that I would catch.

I personally had to import infernalis from europe just to have unrelated animals. It was that or go to california and catch my own lol

Theres not many garter snake breeders so theres not much demand. If more people wanted them then it would be different. And the people that do breed garters only keep a few species so...youll see

I guess so, I'm so used to the corn snakes and other animals I keep being popular so I guess I just kinda figured there would be more demand. Oh well I'd still love to work with them

Infernalis are beautiful but they are a very flighty species and can be pricey. Id look into santa cruz garters. Theyre beautiful and very docile and do great kept in groups. Tim spuckler of third eye herp has them every year for around 30-60 dollars and theyre worth every penny

I'll have to look them up and that's much better than some of the prices I've seen for infernalis.

From legal stock or not, no one has produced an animal like that for public sale yet, in spite of names like "neon" and "blue-sided." I feel the hue, contrast, brightness, color, and whatever else is at a photo-editor's disposal is at play here (and on scores other super-bright garter "photos"), and even in a book on endangered species, 30-ish years ago, where I first learned about this beautiful serpent. Over the years, I've been fortunate enough to see some awful pretty garters in person, but not like that photograph. The reds look almost colored in on that pic, much like the "neon blue" does on others I've seen. Gartersnakes are much like live corals in this respect, from the right angle and lighting (and in the case of the OP's picture, pure painting), an animal can look spectacular, but then to the naked eye, appear quite plain. At least in contrast. All this to say, my biggest advice is -love the animal you're buying with your own eyes, if possible, and not though a camera lens.

Aye, this is a "neon" I held at the show, and even this is somewhat brightened with an Instagram filter. She was still beautiful regardless!

Beautiful snake, despite the filter. I think part of the appeal of them is the blue and red contrast. Feels like it should be some tropical elapid or something lol

Theyre always more beautiful in real life. My friend confirmed he has about a dozen babies from the original breeders that started the neon blue line. Doesnt get much better then that. You can look him up on facebook at donsgartersnakes.

If it's anything like my coral snow corn snake I can only imagine how pretty they are in person. Pictures don't do justice to how pretty she is
