I got my hatchling through a close friend who is a herpetologist who would bring her corn snake on campus. When she bred it, she asked if I wanted one of the babies from her breeding project and I was sorta unsure about it as I didn't know if I could manage it. But I ended up purchasing a little snow motley boy from her.

I am almost a month into owning him and really enjoy him. He is a really calm snake and loves climbing. In fact, he loves to climb on my glasses and my hair. I try not to let him go into my hair since I am not sure if that is healthy for him, but he is very persistent on it and will stretch out to climb on me.

He is quite the character and I plan on possibly adopting another snake soon, but still learning about genetic terms for snakes. I honestly never expected corn snakes to be sooooo lovable <3!

Sounds like you've caught the corn snake bug. So glad you are enjoying your new snake. Hang out here long enough and just about any question you have will be answered, but still feel free to ask.

When you get a chance please post a pic of your little one so we can all tell you how cute he is!

Welcome! He sounds very cute! My snake (Jag) did that when she was little and even now that she is almost 5 ft long she still tries to crawl through hair and knock off my glasses :)

Yeah, it is a pretty nice town but very hot during summers.

Yes I have. I am more familiar with larger snakes since the person who babysat me as a kid had a Burmese python, so smaller snakes made me nervous. I am currently looking at everything available in the forums currently, but I will probably ask about temperature soon.

I will definitely post pictures when I get the chance too, thanks so much <3!

Oh gosh, I am laughing imagining him trying to act like a teeny snake when he is bigger. He likes to rest on top of my head.

His name is Udon, like the noodle.
 
Hey there defiguringitout! Welcome and congrats on your new acquisition! Seems like you caught the cornsnake bug! Most folks don't know how lovable they are until they either handle one or own one! Or two! Or three!! LOL!

Anyhow, hope you stick around! This is a great place for cornsnake owners and admirers alike. Also great if you're in a bind and don't know what to do relative to your new little sneaky one, since the wealth of knowledge & experience here rivals any book on the subject. Speaking of which, if you're really new at snake keeping, you might wanna look into one of the more popular books on the topic, as more info is only good info, so that you can weed out the garbage, that is!

Let us know if you've thought of a name for your snake yet!

I will most likely end up lurking mostly since that is something I tend to do on forums, but definitely am enjoying some of the content so far. I definitely am researching on stuff, but any book recs will be wonderful.

The two cornsnake books that get recommended most are, one by Kathy Love & the other by Don Soderberg. You'll have to Google them because the exact titles escape me at the moment.

First its California not Callifornia! :face_palm_02: I don't know how the iPad let that one pass. Autocorrect usually corrects stuff I don't want to correct, but misses something like that, lol. Yeah, I lived up the hill a bit so it wasn't quite as hot. I still have friends all over NorCal and fly in and out of Sac International when I go back.

I handle my little ones over my bed and then give them more free range as they grow., however never take your eyes off of them because they can disappear in a crack you didn't even know existed in a wink of an eye.

Adult corns are really comfortable to handle. They mostly weigh around a pound or a little more. Very gentle though when they want to grip they are pure muscle. My baby went from 14 grams to 140 grams in a year so they grow up pretty fast.

Sounds like you're doing great with him. Corn Snakes are awesome pets, and there is some great information out there on their genetics.

Our snake, Jack, loves to climb on our heads and into our shirts. I guess he likes the warmth and the safety, but its always hard to untangle him once its time for him to go back. : )

Welcome defiguringitout! I'm sure you'll love watching your little one grow! Just some basic requirements and a mouse every once in a while :licklips: I too lived in CA! Of course, a long, long time ago. I was in first grade! That's where I learned to ride a bike, and on the concrete sidewalks of San Mateo you learned fast! We also went to Disneyland when it was pretty new ... I wasn't even 1 yr old when it opened in 1955! Now I'm a tad older.

Hiya there zakdat! How ya been?

I guess I can understand wanting to bypass all the challenges that come with caring for hatchlings, but once you become experienced, you might wanna revisit that part of cornsnake care, as long as you have the small amount of resources necessary to meet the slight changes or modifications necessary in meeting their needs. They aren't THAT much of a handful, as long as they're established eaters, which can be immediately or can actually take some doing. No breeder or pet store (imo) should be trying to sell or re-home a hatchling who hasn't yet become familiar with pinkies as a food source. That said, hatchlings, like most animals when they're babies, are amongst the CUTEST animals out there, with their little, clumsy mannerisms and their curiosity at just about EVERYTHING within the confines of their small world.
