another thermostat question

I've seen people recommend putting the thermostat probe between the UTH and the glass; is there a reason for this? It seems to me that it would be easier to position the UTH and readjust the probe if needed if it were taped to the outside of the UTH, but maybe not.

I put mine on the bottom of the UTH. I use duct tape. Some folks use foil tape. While at one time some recommended in between, as a practical matter, taped to the outside makes more sense and doesn't bend the UTH, which putting it between would do. That might actually compromise the wiring inside the UTH, so that's why many of us put it on the outside/bottom in the middle of the UTH.

You still need to monitor the temperatures with a thermometer on the inside on the glass in the middle of the UTH. Your temp setting on the thermostat may be 10 degrees different than what the thermometer reads, but it is the thermometer that you need to go by. Right now my corn snake's read 92.6 on the thermostat and 86.7 on the thermometer.

Thanks, DollysMom! And yes I am going to get a thermometer/hygrometer, hopefully a 2-in-1 if I can swing it. Currently looking into the All Living Things one, but reviews seem a little mixed.

(Different question if that's okay, for you or anyone else - one of the thermometers I was looking at today said that it should be placed outside of the tank with the probe going in, which seemed a little weird to me. It was a suction-cup thermometer, no adhesive or anything, so I'm not sure why it would have to go outside? Maybe so it doesn't fall and hurt your pet?)

I have mine like this. (I have a second heat pad for the winter, but the cool side thermometer usually doesn't have a UTH under it in most set ups)

I just use $2 thermometers from eBay. They suction cup on both the thermometer and the probe. The hygrometer is just a little ExoTerra, but it's accurate enough. Humidity does not need to be measured as closely.

Thank you! (For all your help, really, you're amazing.) I was able to find some cheap thermometers on Amazon, plus a thermostat and hygrometer - if all goes well I'll be able to do an initial temperature test this weekend to make sure everything is ready to go.

Just wondering where your stat probe is situated .

Also is that silver sticky tape in the Viv ??

The state probe is taped on the outside of the UTH in the middle. You are seeing the tape through the glass. It is on the outside.

Just tape it to the snake.... I'm joking btw lol sorry I just couldn't resist, I'm a jerk :( . Putting the state probe in the middle isn't necessary, but is the most logical place to put it. I believe that's what she means, nice post about that chart dollysmom; your very informative :) .

You are welcome. Yes, that's what I mean. Besides there are often many good ways to do something.

If something is truly dangerous or harmful, everyone speaks up fast. I'm glad you said it was a joke. It would have gotten really interesting if you hadn't! :duck:
