Chicken necks

The thing that I don't understand is why????
I do understand if you needed a food source and were down on your luck and only had chicken necks but to me it seems more of a hassle to prepare than defrosting a mouse. Are necks any better than mice??? Is it way cheaper than mice???
Maybe I'm just lazy by nature or just missing something here. But is there a reason to feed a snake a food item other than mice if... there mice are available to you??
I don't want to start a whole ball of wax here with flames,... just want to know. :shrugs:
 
2 reasons. I want to add some more diversity and i want to give them less calories without having to let them go hungry. I already skip on a regulair basis and that makes a difference but i will the adults still take to much in.

It is bad enuff that we put these animals in jail for there whole lives. Why can we give them a verity of foods how would you like it if you ate the same thing everyday, in nature they have a whole range of diffrent foods to eat . I would not be suprised if they hunted a certin type of pray animal more than others. You got to look at the big picture. A varied diet is the best for good health. Why do so many captive breed snakes get fatty lumps on there bodies. I dont find it much in WC animals. The problem is most people are sheep and follow the heard iin stead of leading the pack.

I happen to agree with you. But personally, just feeding mice/rats is good for me. Maybe you should prepare these chicken necks and sell 'em...?
 
So in your opinions you guys believe a diverse diet is healthier.
So... you feed mice and chicken necks. What else do you feed if any thing (rat/mice will say is the same). And how often do you switch it up. neck /mice.

I still think it's worth it cause I believe breeder/pet owners have fed strictly mice and still have healthy snakes.

But who's to say without dissection them which one is healthier.:shrugs:
 
Your vieuws match mine Vinman. It seems doing something slightly different then what's in the books you get at least a few raised eyebrows.

I've noticed more people complain about fatty lumps as well. 1 mature snake i bought has *a lot*. Even though slimmed down and has a good weight now, the lumps stay. My snow male is squishy of fat starting halfway the body. And last week 1 noticed a small lump on another male. Somethings not right. So there both on a diet. Though i must say i am not entiry convinced those lumps are fat. I went to a reptile specialised vet here in the Netherlands (Marja Kik) and she said she saw those lumps increasingly often. She said if she would stick a needle in it fluid would come out. If the snake is healthy and eating there was nothing she could do (Except send me a high bill)

I think i've seen chicken hearts right here in the supermarket. I assume that's worth a try as well? Does that need to be cooked as well? How ofter can you feed that?

Again, i don't mean to stop feeding mice. Just to give them something else sometimes. I will start feeding other rodents with my next order from them.

yuo need to boil everything because it is still comes out of the slauter house in nature most of there diet is eaten right after they kill it . Some dead animals are eating too. you have to realsize that the chicken is raised in a dirty place with little ventilation. Unlike wild birds.
 
I use mice, mice, organ meat, mice ,mucile meat, mice, mucile meat, I use about 2/3 rodent to 1/3 chicken . a little more mucile meat that organ meat

I don't know if I buy into the idea that they benefit from a diverse diet, especially if part of that diversity is something that they don't encounter in nature. However, I like your second motive, i.e., giving them fewer calories but still feeding them. But I think I'd just go with smaller rodents or even whole chicks before I went the chicken parts route.

Sometimes this topic creates heated debate. It's nice that this time, the atmosphere is "cooler". :cheers:
 
Even though i still doubt cooking is better then raw (Like feeder mice are taken better care of then cattle for human food) i will buy some chicken hearts next time. Boil it and see if any of my snakes care for it. I'm still to scared to boil anything with bones in it. I will post my results here.
 
Oh Vinman, know anything that i should not feed my snakes? Things like liver (To much Vit A or something)

Talk about going wild with food. I heard (And seen pics) of someone giving unfertilized snake eggs to their Milksnake. And the snake ate them all to. Do snakes eat birds eggs in the wild? (Don't worry. I am not running to my cooler getting some chicken eggs ;) Nice for calcium i would think.

I've fed LOTS of unfertilized corn snake eggs to my kingsnakes. My Florida kingsnake once ate about twenty of them in one sitting (and other stuff besides)!

Here's a (bad) photo of my MBK male eating a corn slug:

too much organ meat is not good. that is why when using pultery I use 60 to 75% mucle meat. Unfertilize eggs is bad they have a hormone in them that take away nutrion from your animal. fertilized eggs are real good and are taken in nature.

A well balanced diet is the best thing , Just eating one pray item only limits the nutrents in a animals diet . You cant beat a wild animals diet. all diffent kinds of rodents are taken , bats, birds babybirds and ther eggs, frogs , toads, fish , lizards and on rare occations I seen hatchling corns from SC eat eachother in captivity that would not take rodents. I had it hapen to me twice this year in the same strain with 2 diffrent animals and The are pur Sc corns. I know of a pet store that used to feed a baby corn crickets and another fish. Who is to say what corns eat in nature. But to say that a diet of just mice and rat is a good diet is just plain foolish. It my work but anain why are there so many snakes in captivity with skin lumps and so few in nature. even in F1 animals there a higher % with this condishion

Dean that is a real good way to spread pathingens from one snake to another. It is not reconmened to feed snake eggs to your kings . I only do this with my living room collection and only with kings I dont care about that go to the pet stores
 
Roy did you have any problems getting them to eat mice again after such a delicious meal? That's kinnda what i fear. Did you ever feed other eggs of small birds? Or are the sharp egg shells dangerous. Just curious really. I don't intent to feed bird eggs. Bit i will keep it in mind if next year i get some bad eggs from my snakes.

Vinman do you have anything to back up the statement that unfertilzed eggs are bad? I eat a few unfertelised eggs a week myself. Who eats the unfertelized eggs in the wild? This just sounds very odd to me. Feeding fertilised eggs it out of the question for me. I want the babies :)

I was talking about chickn eggs not snake eggs In chicken eggs the hormone is only desapated by frying not boileded or raw
