Feeding?

I am finally getting my snake tomorrow!!:dancer: I have a question and I know its going to sound stupid but if a snakes fed in his home will it associate my hand coming in with feeding time and get confused? Is it better to take the snake out of the tank to feed it?

Most people on this forum, me included, will advise against feeding in their enclosure. Now with that said, I house my snake with aspen substrate so I fear her ingesting some and becoming impacted.

Also, by removing her to a separate container for feeding, I get a chance to check her out physically, weigh her and clean her viv while she isn’t in it. Plus she doesn't develop "the big hand comes in only at feeding time syndrome". So yes, I feel it is better to remove your snake to feed it.

Regards,
Steve

Ditto with Steve, I use Aspen so feed in seperate tub. Although this year have some really cranky hatchlings so they are on paper towel and eat in there tub and handle them between feeds. susan

thats great, thanks. How long after the snake has eaten do you return it to teh original tank?

I don't wait long as I feed multiple snakes on the same day. I would say once you can see the mouse has started going down near the middle of the snake. I pic them up supporting the part with the mouse and gently put them back. Then you shouldn't handle the snake again for 36-48 hours, good luck ca't wait to see pics, susang

Congrads on the new snake! Make sure to post pictures when you get it home. I would wait 3-4 days before feeding it for the first time to let it settle in and for the stress level to go down.

I agree with the mouse being towards the middle of the snake before putting it back in, although I feed mine in Critter Keepers and just take the lid off and let them slither out of that into the bottom of the cage. I normally angle it so they can come right out and into a hide. By doing this, I don't have to handle them at all until they've digested the meal.

ok! so I got my new little one today! its (not sure of sex) going all over the tank and very livley. Its due for a feed tomorrow, last one would be 7 days....shall I still wait a few days or just try it?

Wait a few more days. It's better to start them out on the right foot versus feeding them when they are stressed and risking a regurge.

Your little one will be perfectly fine waiting a few more days.

ok! thank you,you have all been really helpful. I'll get some pictures in a few days. I can't stop looking at the little one, they are so fascinating!

Congrats on your new snake! Personally I tend to feed new snakes whenever they're due, but then I'm not usually more than an hour or 2 journey time from collecting them.
The snakes I did make wait longer had travelled from the USA to Hamm, then had a rest and feed in Northampton (thanks, Nige!), then collected by me, another day or 2 in Brum then a 5 hour journey down to Kent.
I've not had any refusals or problems personally with the new snakes fed the same evening, but equally the more travelled babies didn't come to any harm from waiting.
So if your set-up, temperatures etc are stable and the snakes have only had a short journey, I wouldn't personally see any need for delaying their feed past when it should be due:shrugs:

I can only go by my personal experience, of usually only a short journey by train(up my jumper in their container if cold). I think perhaps the usual advice here would be more relevant to snakes that have been shipped.
If you are sure the temps etc are stable, I'd say offer a feed when it's due. If it's refused, try again in 5 days:shrugs:
