Heating Question

Ok I just got my new corn about two days ago and have her in a 20g tank with an UTH heater. My question is, I have a thermometer with the UTH (zoomed brand) but I'm scared it's getting to hot for her. So what can I buy in order to control the UTH?

Is there a specific brand I should use or just go to Walmart and see what they have? Thanks for the quick reply by the way :)

WallyWorld won't have what you need (although... I'll get to that in a minute).

If you want a thermostat, which I think is better, then the least expensive route is to get a 500R (also a Zoo-med product). At least for me, they're harder to find locally since PetBox (can't remember it was 'Co' or 'Smart') stopped carrying them.

You can also go online and find it, and other more 'high end' units. Google The Bean Farm and see what they have. The HerpStat progressive units are very good and easy to use.

Back to Wal*Mart for a second. Instead of a thermostat, which regulates based on a temperature sensing, you could use a rheostat, which is a fancy way to say "dimmer switch." It isn't all that hard to make your own using an extension cord, dimmer switch and an electrical box you can get at Wal*Mart for under $10 and have enough change for a burger. The big difference between a dimmer and a thermostat, is that as the temperature changes, you have to adjust the dimmer up and down to keep the UTH at the temperature you want. That's essentially what a thermostat does if you think about it.

Either way is FAR better than letting a UTH run unregulated. It'll just get too hot for your snake without it.

go to Reptilesupply.com..Their selling the 500R Zoo-med thermostat for a really good price..cheapest I've seen so far :0)

Walmart also sells a pre-made rheostat, in the hardware section. It's a wired "lamp dimmer" for about $9. I have one, it works just fine.

Just make sure you also havbe a digital thermometer with a PROBE. Put the probe right over the UTH, under the substrate, to get the temp at the hottest point.

WalMart sells an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer with a probe for abut $12 that shows 2 temps and humidity. Also in the hardware section. Just make sure you get the wired probe and not one of the wireless models.

Thanks for the help everyone! I went and got a lamp dimmer but even on the highest setting the UTH doesnt heat so I guess I'm going to have to order the thermostat. Now should I keep the UTH on until I get the thermostat or off? With the UTH temps can get well above 95 and witout it temps go down to 75.
