just put a heat mat under my tank and the condensation keeps goin round the sides how do i stop this

cheers mate ill try that now. everyone seems to be really friendly on here. i only got my snake yesterday so will probs have many more questions to come. thanks again

A few things to try:

Move the water bowl well away from the mat
Increase ventilation
Check your temps; the mat could be too hot

How long has the mat been in place?

I put the mat in about 2 hours ago waters as far away as can be. I have put more holes in the lid and it seems to have resolved my problem.
Another 2 quick questions

he keeps hiding in the substrate and not anywhere else why is this?
and he has'nt eaten his pinky yet which has been in for a good hour is this ok?

thanks

Substrate hiding is quite normal.

For the pinky. he may be feeling a little stressed with his temps/humidty fluctuating today. Is your heat mat regulated?

Hiding in the susbtrate is perfectly common, and they often prefer it to the ready-made hides, as they feel more enclosed when buried in the substrate (snake are agoraphobic, especially hatchlings).

First off, if you only got your snake yesterday you shouldn't try and feed it the day after. You should give your snake at least 3 days to settle in. Think about it logically mate. Take the pinky out, and give your snake a few more days. Then, when he/she has settled in, take him/her out and place her in a plain box/tupperware. This prevents ingestion of substrate, wakes your snake up (because when they're buried in the substrate they very rarely notice) and also prevents association of hand = food.

Temperature fluctuation also causes snakes to go off their food. Do you use a thermostat to regulate the mat? If not, I'd HIGHLY recommend getting one, some mats can reach 110F and higher when unregulated. Warm side temps should be 80 - 85F and cool side should be 70 - 75.

Thaw the pinkie out, warm it in some warm water, and then dangle it with a pair of tongs. This stimulates a feeding response.

I hope that helps

David

Is the pinky on the substrate? Keep in mind that a pinky can be a bit sticky and if your snake does eat it, some substrate might go down with it. That could cause a problem, but usually not. On the other hand, why risk it?

To add to Becks' good advice, you might also try a smaller water dish.

Corn snakes, especially young ones, LOVE to burrow, so yours isn't at all abnormal. With the 4 I have in light bins, I've taken to lifting them up and peeking at the bottom before even looking for them because chance are they're down there somewhere.

Welcome!

everythings ok now cheers for all the advice hes eaten the mouse now.
I put the mouse on a plastec tray in the cage so it dint eat any substrate.
Think im just a bit worried bout him since i only just got it.

Cool. Yeah, it just takes some getting used to. "Exotic" pets are just different than "normal" pets. Some more than others. Kind of like visiting a country with a different language and culture. You can study books and learn the language, but when you first arrive you see a lot of little nuances that you just can't pick up in a book or language class.

Looks like you're off to a great start!

Oh, yeah... Now comes the *really* hard part... letting him chill out for a few days to digest. It is so hard to leave the cute little thing alone at first after they eat. I know one of the (minor) reasons I ended up with multiple snakes is so that while one is being left in peace to digest for 2-3 days, I always have another to interact with!

ye i can see what ya mean gona be tempting but ill stop myself. dont wanna annoy the lil guy

Yeah, good man :)

Leave him alone for 48 hours to prevent regurgitation :)

I don't know if you've already seen this, but here's a link to the Munson Plan. It's a feeding chart that shows you the appropriate size prey item for your snake's weight (if you don't have a set of digital scales that weigh in grams, you can get a set in Argos or ASDA for about £7.)

Here's the link: http://cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=50106&highlight=Munson+Plan+(sample+feeding+chart)

All the best mate
