Ok...So she is home now!

Yeah, because if you have a normal light, you have to be REALLY careful not to let the towl touch it.
When my friend was handling his gecko for about a minute or two, he did a stupid move and put the lamp face down on the carpet.

There now a spot in his room of hardened gooey mess.

I think more to the point, that if the bulb was inside the viv. it could seriously burn your snake.

Oh, no, it is jsut a regular 40 watt household light bulb in one of those Flukers brand light things lol, and it just sits on top of the cage cover (metal) but she so far has stayed on the cool side of the VIV, so..I don't even know the temp right now fo rthe cooler side :(

There is no reason to have the light if you leave it on 24/7 you are actually creating a false daytime all the time. Snakes need night time.

I would just toss it aside. You do not need a light for this.
With just the UTF, you should be fine.

When you look at it with the temps that snakes need, only a person that lives in a place like where I live would need a lamp, and even at that just a low powered one.

lol, I hope that mine isn't too shy, she jsut came out for a drink, and I walked into my room and accidentaly disturbed her and she hid again :(

Don't worry, Flash does that too. They think we are a big predator. It will take a while for them to trust us. Flash has only been out once (last night for a bit) since I fed him on Sunday, he's been hiding, mostly in the empty eye glass case I left for him. So don't feel bad. Flash hides most of the time too so I don't get to see him much.

Also, as far as a light goes, I have a full spectrum UV light sitting on top of Flash's cage, I turn it on during the day to simulate the sunshine and because it allows me to see into his viv better. I don't leave it on for more than 12 hours. A light is more of a personal preference thing than anything else. Corn snakes don't need to have light to be healthy but at the same time, all snakes can benefit from UV light (as read in Don Soderberg's book).

Hmm, yeah

Reminds me of watching my friend take his gecko out.
The little guy would stomp around in his cage like he thought he was some huge alligator, and all of the sudden my friend picks him up and the gecko loses his dignity.

Just let them settle.

I only keep the light on about 10 hours a day!

Hunter, are you reading our posts? you do not need the light.
I have over 50 snakes.. none have a light.

Prime examples of setups.
The only cage here that has a light is one with a Blue tongue skink below. the 2 cages above it contain a Black Milk Snake and a Florida King.

I know that I DON"T NEED A LIGHT, but it is really cold in my house, especially at night, it gets down to the low 60's-high 50's, and it was only like 60 something in the cage withought getting the glass temp blistering hot, so I use it casue I like to have a light, and because it helps to warm up the tank a bit, but mostly jsut for my personal prefferance, cause my room is SUPER dark! lol

Hunter, I live in a place that it got 20 below outside in the winter, and my terrariums on an outer wall.

The inside tempature of the terrarium got about 70 ish with a crappy heat pad.
I might need a MINOR light.

ok... I live in ohio, it got down to -19 one night, so.. yeah, and my mom doesn't excactly have the most money ever, so we keep our heat as low as we can, and use lots of blankets lol

Ah crap, now for a real double post

Hunter, my dad isnt exactly the biggest money spender in the world either.
He keeps the tempature low, it says 69 on the thermostat, but it feels like 59.

Hmm, well in any case, I like the light, so as long as it isn't hurting her, Im gonna use it lol, Cause it is nice being able to see your new friend lol :)

Congrats Hunter! So is Sybel the name?

Don't worry about the light thing. My house is old and cold. I have a few babies in tanks with heat pads and no light. They are growing and eating just fine. If your little girl gets cold she will know to move to the warm side. Don't worry she know more what to do than you think she does.

Can't wait for the pics! ;)

Thanks Becky! Yeah, I figured she knows what to do, but she has stayed on the cooler side so far, under the aspen, she hasn't found her hides yet lol, or just likes the aspen more :), anyways, I don't know what I'm going to name her yet, Sybel is nice, but still not sure, what id u end up naming yours? Anywho, the glass temp is about 86.5 degrees right now, and I took A LOT of aspen edding out because I had about 1 and 1/2 inches of bedding in there, and Dave told me I only needed 1/2 an inch of bedding, so now the UTH heat seeps to the top too :) YEAH!! lol

Hunter2011,

A pic of Flash's home, someone else who likes having a light on her snake. :)
