corn snake vs ball python

Fiance saw a ball python at the LPS last night and started falling in love. :smash:

Any thoughts on pros/cons of corn snake vs. ball python?

We are getting a tank this weekend that would be big enough to house an adult ball python. This will put a bump in my plans on having 2 corns but either way I'm getting a corn for myself.

In a nutshell,

corns are more active, you'll see more of your corn in its viv than a ball/royal python, which you may hardly see in its viv.

When being handled corns keep moving around, where as a ball python tends to just hang out.

Corns will normally eat anything you put in front of them where as ball pythons can fast for large periods often giving worries to new keepers.

However both are regularly recommended as good starter snakes

Must admit i was in a similar conversation wit my girlfriend except i wanted an albino Burmese and she wants another corn. She wont let me get the albino Burmese because of how big they can grow :(. but in the end we decided on a new corn, (is there any way while the Burmese is a baby i can disguise it as a corn).

Atumn75: there was a thread like this that was created about a month ago. In serch do a serch for "ball python V.S cornsnake"

I'd go with a corn first. They are great pets (as are Ball Pythons) and for the money they are easier to get the color/morph you want. Both can be very sweet snakes, and both are relatively hearty. BP's are known to have their feeding issues, which are far less common in corns.

Either way best of luck on finding a snake that makes you happy. Just be forwarned as I am always able to find a new snake that does that! They are so addictive!!!!

Since you say you'll be getting a corn snake eventually anyway, I say go for the ball python. Variety is the spice of life.

As far as the burmese vs. corn debate - that's like apples and oranges. Actually it's like choosing between cat vs. leopard for a pet. Most people don't have the capacity to keep a leopard. My default recommendation will always be to get the corn.

Ah! Thank you.

I'm still gonna say Corn though. They are slightly easier to care for than a BP and normally Corns have far less troubles than BP's. That and who's to say you don't get a BP down the road.

Burms aside from being just a wee bit larger than what I am prepaired to own are gorgeous animals. funny how something so calm and docile can be so ferocious and deadly. Snakes are great!

My recommendation would have to go to a BP... I've got 4 balls and 8 corns.

3 of my balls are non-stop cruisers. Their temps are perfect, they eat well, breed, etc... but they never stop cruising.
My corns, on the other hand, sit like lumps in their hides (with the exception of two of them).

I can take a BP out and watch TV for two hours and not feel like I'm wrestling with it half the time.
My corns won't sit still for 3 minutes.

I'm pretty much always sure that one of my corns will try to take a piece out of me on feeding night. All my BPs want is to be allowed to eat in peace-put a dead rat on the ground, in a few minutes they'll get interested, and when you peek in 10 mins later the rat's half gone.

I just personally like the look and feel of a girthy-er snake, but that's personal preference. I also think that Ball's faces make them look like puppy dogs.

Don't get me wrong, I love my corns. However, my BPs are really my little buddies. Maybe I'm just lucky, because I've heard so many people call them pet rocks... and I've got one that is.

I gotta agree with Jaime, I have a corn, and I love her to bits shes my first baby, but my brothers gf has a ball python and hes beautiful and really docile, he'd be cool to have sit around next to you........my personal opinion everyone should have one of both, so you can have BOTH their personalities because I think they're benefits in both :)

I'd rather have two of both.. and a carpet python.

Don't get me wrong, my BP has never balled up on me and about a third of the times I look at her cage she is out and about, and I will admit she is a sweetheart. If I was judging by general temperment and personality I'd say BP all the way, but when it comes to feeding issues and shedding and what not I have just always found Corns to be somewhat easier. Not that I have a preference at this point. If I see a BP I like I buy it (excpet for the high end pricey ones! I wish I had an axanthic!), if I see a corn I like I buy it. When I see an ETB I want I drool and wish I made more money!

If your gonna end up with both eventually I guess it just comes down to which one you see first that strikes your fancy.
