Taking the jump

Alright, not to be another downer but last night I talked to a friend of mine who does shows like this for a living for the last 20 years.
He stated when doing any show like this is to have insurance.
This is to protect you from living in poverty for the rest of your life. He stated he currently has a policy that runs about $1500 a year for showing his animals. This insurance is to protect you from the parents of any children who may deemed that their child has been injured by a snake. And this could be anything, from mental harm to physical harm. They would go after you and the school due what ever harm the animal has brought on them.
And typically, when it deals with reptiles the parents when and you do not have a chance in winning. So the insurance is there to protect you against any lawsuits and medical bills for your audience.

This falls under the do not let the children touch or hold your animals. As I have always stated, all animals will bite, even friendly corn snakes. Even if there is no mark on the child. An angry parent may bring a law suit on to you and can cause you some financial set backs in your life. by the way, his policy is about $2 million.

Why is America so 'sue-happy'? No offence intended here, it just seems a little pathetic that you'd sue someone that was trying to educate your child for such a measly reason, if in the rare occasion that a Corn snake did bite...

Not just that, there are cases of Salmonella as well in the herp world. But seriously, its better to protect yourself in the long run.

Yeah, we have lawyers in this country as well. And I'm sure they have them in nearly every country in the World. I was simply wondering why America is so 'sue-happy', because no where else is like that. If you don't know the answer, it doesn't matter.

Because the people who are being sued tend to have a lot of money and will just hand it over if they think it would end the bad take on themselves.

The school is having each kid bring home a form that has to be signed saying that their kid can learn about, touch, and be close to the snakes. If they are not signed then the kid won't be able to be in the room. The school has it covered and we are only showing two snakes to two classes I think things will be fine. Thanks though. Thanks for the link to the care sheet also!!
