Question about controlling temps

That has the little sticky probes that stick on the glass right? That should work ok for you, but you should also use a rheostat or thermostat to control the temp. When I first plugged in my UTH and let it sit, it got up to over 100F on the lowest setting. Not sure if this is a normal thing or not, but now I use a rheostat and thermometer, and it's been steady, but I still want to get a proper thermostat rather than the rheostat. I'm scared of being away from the house for an extended period of time and having it overheat.

I was asking about the item I linked to...it said it connected to heating devices and could control the temp...I was wondering if it could work with my UTH and if so how it worked

You adjust the control knob up or down (high or low) until the desire temperature level is reach. Think we had a slight misunderstanding as I think the item I linked is a temperature control device :)
 
You know, I realized that after I posted, and I meant to come back and correct my post but my kids knocked over a plant. I'm sorry, you're right. I was thinking that it was just a thermometer, not a temp. control. Sorry. It's possible that you just plug your heat mat directly into it like the rheostats, but I'll leave that to someone who knows what the heck they're talking about. ;)
 
It works with any heating device. You plug the UTH or lamp into one of 2 outlets on the ZooMed 500R Thermostat. (2 prong, not 3)
There is a probe that you need to put right on the heat source, or on the glass right over the UTH. You will still need a good digital thermometer with a probe. Put the thermometer probe next to the thermostat probe.

Turn the dial on the thermostat to about halfway point and see where the temperature stabilizes after a while (I'd give it a couple hours). Then adjust as needed to get the heat ranger around 82-85.

The way it works is it turns on the heat and leaves it on until the probe reaches the set temperature, then it switches off the UTH. When the temp drops 2 or 3 degrees it turns back on again.
