Moustache Rides
Alright well, to start off I bought a Okatee corn on saturday. I had a bearded dragon for about a year and a half, but I always wanted a snake since I was a kid. While I had my dragon, I did a lot of research and stuff on the reptilerooms forums but I spent most of my time reading about corns.

Anyway, the snake is about 10 inches long, he was the biggest of the bunch of Okatees. I bought a 20gal long tank and set it up with paper towels at first (I couldn't remember which substrate was recommended). I put the hay colored aspen stuff in his tank. If anyone has any suggestions, please feel free. I bought a 8x8 UTH and a Zoo-med Reptometer thinger for a thermostat. 1 hide on each side, small water bowl in the middle, still trying to find a climbing stick that would suit him best. He likes to climb on the wires for the probes, it's rather funny. The thermostat keeps the temperature varying from 82-87 degrees, I would like to know how to keep it at a steady 85, I think I may have to search for a better thermostat.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. :)

Forum looks great, I plan to keep reading and posting.

Sweet, I guess all you did was read the title.

I've read plenty of care sheets, I just like hearing from other people and reading their suggestions on brands and such.

But thanks for the link, I'll start copying it and pasting it into new memebers' posts for you.

ok thanks, but if you read that it'll tell you everything you need and what to get and what to do. After reading all those links, and all the posts i'm not gonna say i knew everything, but i knew a lot of noob questions so i didn't have to look like a noob right off the bat. Your welcome, never know by posting and help other you might get some rep power points.

Welcome to the forum! Hope you enjoy your stay here..When ya get the chance we would love to see pics of your new snake :0)

As for looking for a new thermostat..If what you bought was the Repti-Therm500R then that thermostat should be fine..if you bought the Zoo Med rheostat I would definitely say look online for a better thermostat as the rheostat by zoo med is not that great at all..They have great pirices at "Reptilesupply.com" for a thermostat :)

Welcome to the forum!:wavey:

Sounds like you have a pretty good set-up. One suggestions though....PICTURES! We love pictures:D

As for the varying temp... I still can't keep mine at a steady 85, so I hope others have suggestions!

The care package has that link in there. BTW

Yes, but the way Fred posted the husbandry and basic care FAQ link was a darn sight more friendly ;)

If I were a new member, nervous about my first post, wondering what the people on this forum were like and as my first response, I got a member post me a link, to a post that contained a whole load of other links, I would think that everyone here didn't have the time to talk to people and would maybe go elsewhere. Hope you understand what I'm saying? :shrugs:

Ftbizzle, Welcome to cs.com, I really hope you stick around and enjoy your stay here, there are some fantastically knowledgable and friendly people on this forum, I'm sure you'll fit right in :D

As for the slight temp fluctuation, I think it will be fine as long as it stays in the acceptable range, which it sounds like it is :)

Welcome again!

Couldn't put it better myself! Welcome Ftbizzle, and where's the pictures of your lovely okeetee?

Thank you for being so kind about it, and i understand what you are saying. I should have thought about that, but me personally. I'd rather someone give me a guide and say read all this first and then come ask questions. I came to this forum knowing the basics, but not very much about corns and when i asked noob questions, people were nice, but also a lot of people gave me very helpful links that i wish i would have had before wandering around the forums, and asking what i thought were very original and unanswered questions.

Haha, pics will be very soon, I promise! :)

Thanks so much for all the replies!

Yep, Maize it is the 500R. So I will just stick with that. Just want to add that I have the probe under the bedding to get an accurate reading.

I also wanted to ask if anyone knows of a good place online that have a large variety of backgrounds for vivariums.

Thanks again for making me feel welcome.

If you check out the new DIY sub-forum, at the top of husbandry and basic care, there are some great threads there on making your own backgrounds etc.

Sorry I can't advise you more, as I'm across the pond and I'm not so sure of what's available over there in the states :)

Welcome to the forums!
You can find some threads here that have ideas for "debugging" wood from outside.
I'm not sure how close the electronic thermostats keep it, but my mechanical thermostat keeps about a 3-3.5°F range. I guess it takes time for the probe to react, and the UTH takes a little time to heat up and cool down.

I live in Nerwark, Delaware and there's not a whole lot of sticks around. I think this weekend I'll maybe go to a park that has nature trails and stuff and hopefully find something.

I didn't think of the time it takes for the UTH to heat up and cool down, that's a really good point.

Susielea, thanks for pointing out that sub-forum, it has a lot of great ideas in there.
