Fluctuating UTH temps

So now that I got a new UTH, I'm thinking that my wall plug in is what is doing the trouble. I have it plugged straight into the wall, so I know it's not the rheostat, and it's still at 73 degrees.

So would a Ranco thermostat be able to control my Ultratherm and zoo med UTHs without problem, since they read such vastly different temps when at the same spot on the rheostat? Would it be able to keep it from fluctuating even when the plug in is working at different power levels?

Also, where is the best place to get a Ranco thermostat from? I'd prefer to get it pre-wired.

What sort of thermometer are you using to measure the temperature? Also where are you placing the thermometer?

In order for you to be able to use them off the same thermostat, they would have to be rated at the same power output. Example: I have a rack with 11" flexwatt and one with 3" flexwatt. They need seperate thermostats because their power outputs are different. The only one putting out the correct temps would be the one with the probe on it. Your best bet is to get two thermostats or rheostats OR get the same type UTH's and regulate them with the one thermostat. I hope that wasn't confusing?

I'm using a thermometer probe, zoo med I think. It's right on the UTH inside the tank.

Yeah, I think I get what you mean. Is it different wattage? I'll get another rheostat for now.

But is there anything I can do about my Ultratherm UTH reading so low? I don't know how to get the temperature up, and I want to feed Samson. =/

I think there may be a fault with the Ultratherm heat mat then, if it's reading that low without running through a thermostat or rheostat. I use these heat mats and unregulated, they put out over 115*F of heat, I've tested them myself :)

Is it possible for you to return it? I had to do this once and they were very understanding :)

How long did you leave it before checking the temps? I don't know of any UTH that stays that low.

I agree with them... UTHs without a rheostat can get REALLY hot!
Plug it in straight to the wall and leave it for 30 minutes (not in the tank). Then go back and put the probe on it. Leave it for 5 min before making the reading.

I was just a little confused because I had my zoo med one (that I had before this one, not the other one I'm using) run at 72-73 degrees without a rheostat too. I'll check the UTH again in a few minutes. Thanks for all the help.

So I unplugged it and replugged it in without the rheostat and it was at 86, so I apparently just had to plug it back in. Thanks for all the help!

86 is still pretty low for an UTH without a rheostat. Although it may be hot enough to make the warm side a perfect temperature, don't trust it without a rheostat or thermostat because it may just start REALLY working as it should (130+ degrees), causing burns to the snake.
