Canabalism question?

Murf301

Believe The Hype!
Ive read on other threads that when starting a first time breeding colony the mice will often eat the first litter. My question is if u have 1:2 for example, would u expect the first litter from both females to be eaten or just the first litter of one of the two?

I think it depends on the mice. I have 2.6 devided into breeding groups of 1.3 If I found a female cannabalising her litter, I removed her from the group to rear her brood alone, and that seemed to stop them from cannabalising. However, one female didn't stop. She had a litter of 13 and ended up rearing only 5.

I am thinking Wade (Wade's Wodents & Weptiles) might be able to give more insight on this than I can.

First of all, set up a colony with one male and several females. From the age of weanling to death, don’t add or change that colony. Sometimes the females when they are young and inexperiensed will eat their young. It is not a given but it happens. As they mature they will become much better parents.

The biggest mistake people make is messing with the colony. Once it is established, leave it alone. Mice have lived on this earth without our help for longer than we have.

okay, thanx for the advice...I have to young snakes so im breeding for pinkys. how soon should i remove them? should i leave a few in there for them to get experience raising them?

I don’t like to take all the babies. Maybe I'm just a boob. I usually take all the babies when they are the size I want but I leave 5 for mom to raise.

I never take all the babies, if you do, then the mom can't get rid of the milk properly.

Just my 2 cents

The mice wouldn't have a problem getting rid of milk. If there is no suckling the milk won't be produced. It's the action of the suckling that stimulates the milk. Some women have babies but don't nurse them.

Mind you I think leaving a few babies would be a good idea to help them maintain good mothering skills.

Sure, some wonem do not nurse their children, however, when my wife didn't do this with our daughter, she was prescribed a medication to dry the milk up. Same way with dogs, some dogs will develop "milk fever" if they have a litter that dies and they are unable to nurse. Their milk does dry up but in some cases it doesn't happen quickly enough and results in infection.

Just not a good practice is all (IMHO)

I think it just depends on the mice I have 4 breeding cages and I have got them all nicely established. I dont have any problems with them eating their litters, but to start with with all new mums its best to just leave them alone as the minute you start bugging them with their new litters is when you get problems and the chance of them eating them.

I recently set up a new cage with 1:3 and they have all had litters and are the babies are now 2 weeks old and doing really well, then one that I had seperated from the parents to grow into fully grown adults suprised me with a litter and she had starting eating them so I had to remove them all rather than risk losing the lot.
