Ultra or Ultramel?

Khaman

Headed for rehab.
Ok, I received 2.2 ultramelanistic corns yesterday and I am even more confused about the ultra “gene” that I was already. I have two that look hypo and two that look amel. I was told they are clutch mates but the parents are a mystery.

So do I have 2 ultra and 2 ultramel? Anyone that can help me puzzle this out for my records?

What about the eyes ?
Amels have red eyes .
And is not unusual that there are amels and ultramels in the same clutch ( as KJUN mentioned )

Photos are not always good, but...

I would say you have two Ultramels and two amels. The ones showing the white around the saddles look like amels from the pictures.

Well they all have red eyes but the amels have a deeper red.

Just so I have it straight, if the amels were even hets for ultra they would look like the hypo ones?

Is it possible to be het ultra and homo for amel?

I am just getting my facts straight before I email the seller.:headbang:

No, the ultra allele is on the same spot of the chromosomes as the ame lgene. An individual snake can have 2 amel copies, 2 ultra copies, or one of each. Those are the only possibilities. In order of that list, you would have an albino (aka amelanistic), a ultra (aka ultra hypo), and an ultramel.

Show better images of the lighter ones we think make be amels - ESPECIALLY good images of the eyes.
KJ

If I remember correctly, both the amel and ultra genes share the same locus. So if a snake is homo for amel, it is impossible for it to be het ultra. All ultramel means is that a snake carries both genes. Thats why a snake can't be het for ultramel. I hope that helps.

Some people would swear they see two hypos and two amels.. I see 2 ultramels and two amels.. Yes, they could easily be clutch sibblings.. KJ nailed it, you can't have an amel het for ultramel, it is impossible considering the way Co Dom gene works..

Are the photo's in your last post of the first three animals in your first post?
IMO If that is the case then only the last photo in the original post is Ultramel.

The pictures in the first post are individual pics of all four animals, males first then females. The first and third pics in the second post are of close ups of the second pic in the first post and other close up is of the third pic from my first post. If you are not confused by that last sentence you are doing better than I am.

Ok Gotcha :)That pair in the second post are definitely amel. The other pair are ultramel.

Are the eyes of the first male (first post) about the same in appearance as the last female (first post)?

Yes, they are. so breeding them together gets me 1/4 amels 1/4 ultra and 1/2 ultramels right?

I hope another co-dominant trait does not show up, this one is giving me a headache. :blowhead:
