Temporary Resident - Help!!

PurraLovesJazz

Poofy-Headed Snake-Addict
[Edit] Now I feel horrible and stupid! I was downstairs where his cage is so I watched him for a while. He cant breathe! Every once it a while he tips his head up and I can hear this raspy sound, or he opens his mouth to breathe! He seemed alright when I had him out, he made some funny whistly sounds but I thought that was because of the bath, because Bella does that. So maybe the cedar wood really IS a problem! But if he's been living in there for 5 years, would he have permanent damage?

I have a big bin I can put him in, to get him out of there, should I just put him on paper towel or something? Should I wait and feed him once before I move him, or not? He's already so skinny and I'm afraid if I move him he will get stressed and refuse to eat. Would the downsize in space make him aggressive? I asked my sister and she says he's always had breathing problems, but maybe its just been since he's lived in there, which was the entire time she had him.

Any help is definitely welcome!! [End Edit]

Ok, well some of you know I mentioned a while back that I might be watching my sister's boa for a while. Well, she just came home and we moved it here!

The poor thing is in pretty bad condition though. It was staying with someone here but then they moved and left it with her parents-in-law, who are afraid of it. The cage hadnt been cleaned in about a year, it took 3 hours to scrub everything clean between me and my sister. He also had some stuck shed, and he's too skinny, he was only getting fed every month or so. She was upset to see him so bad, he was her favorite and the only one she didnt sell or give away when she had to move. She's been trying to save up money to haul him and his cage cross country to Oregon, but she hasnt been able to yet. She's going to try to get him out there in the next year. She didnt know he was so badly taken care of.

I did manage to soak him and get most of the stuck shed off, theres just a little left on his head and neck. His cage has been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected, his heating fixed, and I'll be trying to put some weight on him.

His setup is pretty impressive if its kept up, its an old wardrobe that her and my mom changed into a very nice cage.

She says he's a hogg island boa? He's about 5ft long, and by her guess, 9 years old, so he's full grown. He's very gravelly looking, and his tail is pretty dark around the orangey saddles.

That's a nice looking viv, and a rough looking snake. I'm sure that will change, then you can post some rehab pics.

Is that a cedar lining in that wardrobe?

I hope that isnt made from Cedar like most old Wardrobes were.
That could become problematic for the animal if it is. It looks nice though.. but again, i hope its not Cedar.

I'm not sure what type of wood it is, but the whole thing is sealed so you cant even feel the texture of the wood. dont know if that makes a difference?

Pretty sure it is cedar on the inside, but like you said, it's sealed.

so if its sealed its ok? I know its sealed pretty well, I remember my mom and sister doing it, they would let it dry then go put another coat on then let it dry, repeat repeat...

It's possible that the cedar is the problem, but I suspect that it's been poor care that has led to an RI. If the parents weren't cleaning the cage or feeding him properly, then I would hazard a guess that his heat may not have been what it needed to be. I would increase his heat to 80-90 degrees and probably get him to a vet for antibiotics. Good luck.

He wasn't cared for very well, it could be a respiratory infection from living in the dirty viv.
Is the light the only heat? I don't know about boas, but I think they need 80's and a warmer spot. That could also be a factor.

yeah, he only has lights. one of them went out when he was living with her in-laws, but there is a new bulb in it so he has two lights during the day, and a red light at night. his heat pad doesnt stick anymore so I have to get a new one to stick to the bottom under his hide.

Get a temp gun (www.tempgun.com) so you know the exact temps. At this point I would hate to be guessing about his temps. In a viv that size, he needs more than two bulbs. Those will only warm the air. Please get him a new UTH pronto.
