i have heard that if you have a uth that you need a thermostat also. what if you dont have a thermostat and have paper towel on it so the snake cant burn itself? isnt a uth ment for being at the botom of tanks and being there? why would you need a thermostat to change someting that was ment to do somthing

A UTH is really an uncontrolled heating device. Your snake needs to be in a certain temperature range to be healthy, which is why you need a thermostat to regulate the temperature.

the uth can burn the snake through the paper towel (the paper towel won't reduce the heat)...plus the snake can quite easily burrow itself under the paper towel.

a uth unregulated (without a thermostat) can easily reach temperatures of over 100 degrees....which is extremely harmful.

i dont think a snake would be dumb enough to go where it is too hot though. also the paper towel does make the tank not as hot...

It doesn't have anything to do with being dumb. Snakes feel heat in a different way than we do, as they're very different animals. Please believe us when we tell you a thermostat is very necessary.

ok i belive you but i am broke and dont have any money, and my dad wont get me one cuz he doesnt think that snakes need a thermostat...so idk what to do

ummmmm.... a temp spike wouldn't allow your little snake the chance to get away. If / When the UTH spikes hits 120+ degrees and your snake is sleeping .... at the VERY least you are gonna have a burnt tummy if not a cooked snake.

Maybe you should have thought about this before getting the snake. These are things that you should have thought about before getting one. Why wont your dad get you one? Cause he thinks they dont need one. Here is something you can do. Get a DIGITAL THERMOMETER with a PROBE (you should already have one of these). Place the probe on top of the area with the UTH and let it sit there. If you have aspen go ahead and place the aspen on top of it. Within moments the temp will reach 100+. Ask your dad if he would want to sleep on that kind of heat, what about when it gets to 200+?

Cheap and works great. http://www.reptilesupply.com/product.php?products_id=75

As I was trying to tell you in chat Chris, w/o the Therm or Rheostat
it will get too hot and could possibly crack your tank too!
You need something to regulate the heat......
The paper towel won't help it, if it feels warm to your hand....
its probably too hot for the snake.

I know im going to get flamed for this but I'm going to say it anyway. If you can't get a therm right away, this is not a solution but a very, very short term alternative. Put the UTH on the back of the tank in the corner 2 or 3 inches above the substrate (bedding) so the snake can't belly contact the heat pad. The radiant heat of the glass will be less then the pad temp. This is only a temporary method. Get a thermostat asap.

Also put the dish in the Front of the tank opposite corner spills contacting the heat pad or warm glass may crack the tank

UTH stands for UNDER TANK HEATER. meaning to be placed under the tank. I know there are people who place them on the side of the tank, how ever the snake doesn't get the proper belly heat they need for proper digesting. I realize you meant it only as a temporary solution, but there are some who may see what you wrote and take it as being a proper way of doing things.

Please get a thermostat or rheostat to keep your snake safe. I can tell you when I first got Tiaga, I had no clue about temps or anything (I was one who didn't do much research ahead of time). But I found this place and found out how high the temps of a UTH could be and knew that could harm Tiaga if I allowed her/him to continue on a UTH without regulation.

You can also buy a relatively cheap 'lamp dimmer' from lowes or home depot or do it best.. I got one for like 9 bucks that I still use when I need it.
If you don't get one, or you have to wait for a while for it, I'd say just don't use the UTH till it's on some kind of temp control. You can just unplug it and keep the snake at room temperature, he'd probably be safer that way for a short time. Don't feed him though while he has no heat.

Good Luck!!
