Possible DIY project....

I was in big lots this morning, in the furniture department and stumbled upon this wardrobe closet.

I dont know if this is definite, cause I have a Chevy Aveo and dont know if this will fit in my car but...

It only has one shelf that goes all the way across.

Its 47-1/2W x 20-1/4D x 72H.....

I was thinking about putting it together, minus the doors and that one shelf.

That shelf I can bring to Lowes and have Lowes cut me plywood that is the same width and length.
Its 72 inches high, with 3 shelves, thats 4 vivs that are 18 inches high, 20 deep and a 47 width. One shelf I think I am going to split in half.

The back I can do pegboard, I can coat the plywood shelves and install overhead strip lights.

I would also drill wood "supports" under the right and left sides of the shelves for added support. Last thing you want is a collapse.


The doors would be plexi with hinges.

What do you think? Would that work?

I wanted something stackable but if I can make a condo out of something this size that would work too.

That would make a nice condo if you can work it out. Draw some pics to see the logistics of it and exactly what you might encounter.
I had one thought, sometimes the inexpensive wardrobes like that are covered in printed paper that can't take moisture.

First, you have to check out the back.
Make sure that is is secure. The "back" will keep the unit square.
Do they have this unit on display? if so push it around a little and see if it stays square.

To save a buck, door your are not using could be used as shelfs.
See if the "guy" can cut it for you. Saying it's for a shoe closet.
I'm lost on the add pegboard on the back. Is there no back?
Wood supports??? Do you mean wrap the sides and back with wood support and lay the shelf on top, Like in a closet??

Is this for tubs, like a rack system?

No, not tubs. Im totally enclosing 4 units and making them vivs.

I did look at the unit for display, youre right I should go and push it around. I paid more attention to the size and interior of it. The reason I said Pegboard for backing is because this seemed like a bigger model of my bookcase, in which the back is simply cardboard. I wouldnt use cardboard backing for a viv.

Is there something better I can use?

The wood shelving would be drilled into place PLUS the wood supports on both side under the shelf also drilled into place.

Id like to drill everything together and not leave it to laying stuff on other stuff.

Thats a good point. Next to it they had a white pantry that was melamine, it'd be perfect but it wasnt wide enough. Only about 20 inches.

You need to go back and check it out for a cardboard backing (sturdy) and like Alan said the paper covering partical board . Which melamine is just cover is a thing layer of plastic sheet.

If the back is cardboard, you can glue and screw a sheet of (3/4" finish on one side) plywood on it.
That screw into the side pieces.

That seems like a good idea and I like the size of it but, if you have to redo the shelves, put a new back on it and support the shelves with more wood anyway, why not just build one youself? I caught the part about having Lowes cut some wood for you and I assume that means you dont have the means to cut it yourself but, it the are going to cut your shelves and some other parts, have them cut new pieces for the main structure of it. The one pictured may work. I just dont put much faith in the pressed wood stuff.

If you were planning on building the doors and ptting it all together yourself, go all the way and build one. I think you can do it! If you are unsure, go with that one for now and you can always upgrade later if you dont like it.
