sphagnum moss - preparation needed ?

I just bought some sphagnum moss for my wet boxes. Before I never could find it here in Thailand so I have no clue how to handle it. Besides spraying it with water, do I need to
do anything else ? How long can I use it before it has to be replaced ?

Thks for your help. :wavey:

I suppose it depends on where you got it....
If it's just been picked up from outside and bagged, you may want to put it in the freezer for a few days to kill off any bugs that may lurk in there...
If it's a sterile petshop moss, you shouldn't have to do anything that drastic...
Get enough moss to fill the hide and place it in a bowl of water.... Then take it out and squeeze the excess water out... Thats it... Just mist ever time you need to make it damp.... We change ours when we clean the vivs.....

Hello,

I've got Sphagnum moss in the wetbox, were my snakes hide when they prepare to shed.
To get rid of any bacteria or parasites, I found out you can microwave it. But be careful, it's very hot afterwards.

I think it can be used, as long as it doesn't smell funny and you can't see any fungi growing.
I changed the moos last week (after 2.5 months). Better save than sorry.

Greetings,
marike
