After handling?

After you handle your snake... What do you do?
Like If you touched the snake and your camera, or your pc... Or even let the snake slither on the carpet...
What do you do to clean it? Or do you not?

Another Q, How many times had everybody here got Sominila?
I've had it once, from 6 years ago at a museum.

i just wash my hands with sanitizer. and for cameras or pc and stuff i use lysol if i think of it. never had salmonella though.

To my knowlege there has never been a case of salmonellosis in humans that was confirmed to be from a pet reptile.... in any event, simple precautions like washing your hands thoroughly after handling and keeping te enclosure clean will reduce the risk to almost non-existent... snakes that aren't slithering through their feces aren't going to transmit salmonella.

I thought that snakes secreted salmonella, at least that's what was taught in high school. >_>

i think snakes create salmonella internally and it shows in their excrement. its not like your snakes excreting salmonella form under its scales to just attack you and cause you harm. i think most people contract it from food or food preparation most likely. just my .02 and not saying im a professional on the subject so do not hold me to my word.

Anybody else??

I wash my hands before handling the snake, but only sometimes after - usually if I'm doing more than just picking him up (Like cleaning out the viv or feeding). I have absolutely no worry about picking up an infection from my snake.

People have no problem petting dogs with absolutely filthy coats and no one has claimed dogs are making people sick. I highly doubt snakes make people sick.

I really only worry about using the hand sanitizer when I'm cleaning up poo or have to go digging through bedding to find a snake. Other than that,I try to remember to use it but, more often than not, forget. I do make other people who handle my snakes use it before handling and that's only to get rid of any smells or anything that could be on their hands causing the snake to bite and me getting the blame for it! LOL!

I usually use the hand san-stuff, before and after..If I am to lazy to use soap and water..
I'm not worried about getting sick really..I do practice keeping my hands clean though no matter what I'm doing. For other reasons. I more afraid of any kind of "Worms" than anything,.. and not from the snakes mind you.
Lester gets smooches on the Yellow snout..so...yeah...may not be the smartes thing..but I am in control of my own well being. So if anything did happen..I'd be only my fault.

"Knowledge is Power" and that sorta stuff...

I use hand sanitizer after handling and between handling my two snakes. I am not sure if they are aware of each other yet. >.>
