I am not etting any idas. I know what I can care for and want I would like to keep. So I will be keeping a Blood python

David, hold off on the blood. Keep your priorities straight... Remember, you have plenty of animals to care for now and college looming ahead. The last thing you need to add to your plate is a BIG, moody, and did I mention BIG! python.

If you DO go through with this, take your brother along when you go to "test run" some breeders' adult specimens. See how he does with some one else's tame adult before you jump blindly into this commitment. Also, keep in mind that big snakes aren't easy to rehome if you ever decide you're in over your head.

You have 2 BCIs and 2 Dums correct! These animals are no different than a blood python. My brother has been in the whole crazy hobby with me since day one. He also likes the blood pythons. Now if I get a male that will cut the size down. Also if I handle regulary I will cut the aggression out. I am still thinking about it but I am seriously leaning toward it.

wait...it says david is banned...yet he can still post? I'm a bit lost here..lol...as for the whole getting a blood python...I honestly would pass on such a high aggressive and large sized snake..maybe try an amazon tree boa or something..why go so big and tough?

The Dums are my mother's. I'm their care-taker while she gets the hang of snake keeping. One of the BCI's is a dwarf, the other is stunted... Both species are tamer than bloods... But all of that is beside the point. Seriously, David. Yes, I have a lot of snakes. And I know I'm seriously going to kick myself for it when college rolls around. I'm already kicking myself for it... I'm down and out with a cold right now (three days into the new school year.. UGH) and I have to fight with myself to stand up and clear my head and nasal passages long enough to feed the snakes. David, I WISH someone would have so adamantly pointed out the "college" aspect before I got in this deep. I don't in the least regret any of these snakes, and I certainly won't be rehoming any of them (except maybe Lucy the Beauty, but that's for different reasons), but I DO wish I would have thought ahead. You're being given the chance to think ahead via various members here shoving the fact in your face. It makes me sad that you won't stop and think about it for longer than a few seconds.

Yes, males are smaller. But they're still massive snakes. And you can't guarantee if it'll even tame down for you. You got lucky with Jasmine and your Beauty taming down so nicely for you, but you aren't necessarily going to get that lucky with EVERY species that has a bad reputation. They have those reputations for a reason, and not all of them are tamable. That fact holds true even for corn snakes and ball pythons, both naturally docile--why not for a naturally "mean"/nasty species?

For that matter, I'd like to point out that the only aspect that boas and bloods share is size. BCI and Dumeril's are both docile species, and bloods very much aren't. For that matter, even the "size" aspect is different, as neither of the boa species in question get as massive around as a blood (male OR female) does.

I don't know why your comment bothered me enough to post again, but it did... Hey, at least it's out of my system. =P

The "BANNED" part is his user title. That can be changed. If he were REALLY banned, I think his name would be red.

As for why he's reaching out for "bigger and 'better'" I have no clue... OCD? But I guess it is his prerogative.

It says he's banned because he put that in his user profile. I learned this the hard way when I questioned Dean's banning that he put hisself on and was still able to view threads. Apparently David followed suit and put his user name on a ban. It's not a real ban, by the mods. Just a self imposed ban.

My Beauty was never mean. And Jasmine is nice because the species can be handled it is people that buy imports that give them the rep they get. Why do I want a snake that is "Mean" mean is a very bad term. Nervous is the correct term. These snakes are not seen in captivity often so i keep them because I love getting out of the same ole same ole. I know the feeling of being sick and getting up to geed. I just say suck it up A hole get of my lazy ass and feed my responsibites. I am a driven person and have listened to everything every person has stated but many of them have no experience with said animal. But when I call well respected breeders I always get a different story. When I called Mrs. Zerkle about king rats (mind you Amy has been doing this for 20+ years) she said king rats are a nervous snake but rarley get overly aggressive. I have handled bloods and the breeder said with handleing they become quite tame and easy to handle. I also have a college plan. Community college then transfer to a 4 year.

My user title is just a joke LOL. Big and tough thats what you said about jasmine and she is a sweetheart!

I have had worst luck with BCIs than Bloods. Let me tell you a story. At a show once I purchased a special pass t get in to the show and have dinner before it opened the next day. Now I was at the blood python peoples table and asked me if I wanted to help them unload so I got to unload an adult male blood and a bunch of bbies. All were very docile and I just had a blast working with them. One of the other vendors asked me if I wanted to see some really cool Boas. They Snakes went nuts when he pulled them out of the deli cups. The bloods were 100% nicer.

What I guess I am saying is it is the KEEPER that makes the snake. Will a snake have a better temperment if it is handled daily or handled once a month?

First, I realize "Mean" isn't a good term to use. That's why I put it in quotes. I didn't feel much like hunting down the correct term.

Second, I'm not trying to start an argument with you. I'm trying to put things into perspective for you. Or something... I think "help you not make the INFORMED decision" may be a better way of putting it. =P

Someone earlier mentioned to be careful who you take advice from--not every breeder is going to be honest with you.. Way too many are just out to make a sale. This is very good advice, IMO. Another one of those things that you should be thinking about. Maybe mention, when you call these breeders, that you aren't (necessarily) looking to buy a blood from them, you just want info.

I completely understand getting out of the "ordinary". There have been many times that I've thought about getting out of corn snakes in lieu of something less "common". I always get a nice reminder of why I chose that species in the first place, though.

I would also like to add that you can't predict what college is going to be like. You certainly can't predict if you're going to have enough time and patience to care for ALL your exotic, needy snakes (especially keeping up with such things as blood pythons). Nor can you predict if your parents will still be as willing to accommodate you when you get into college as they say they will be now. Plus, you have to keep in mind that your brother "handling partner" isn't going to be at your disposal forever... He'll be going to college, what, one year after you? What if he goes out of state? Who will help you then?

Again, I'm not trying to start an argument, I'm just trying to point out some facts/scenarios that you may not have considered already.

Bloods get up to 9 foot but a blood over 7 foot is rare. Male get much smaller around 4 foot
