Heat lamp?

I was just wondering if anyone thinks that using a heat lamp instead of a heat pad under the tank is better/easier? I just want to make sure everything is perfect for my little ones :D

Heat lamp:

Uses more energy
Overheats easier

Snakes need substrate/belly heat, and most snakes only use the warm side to digest meals

Not recommended

Mat (UTH) + thermostat seems to be the preferred option and it's what I use. A stat is recommended as mats can get well over 110 degrees without one, which is dangerous for Corns.

If you do decide on a lamp (ultimately it's up to you), then remember to get a stat for that as well. A lamp won't overheat if it's controlled in that way.

My apartment runs quite cold in the winter time. Is it possible Humphrey would benefit from a heat lamp just for winters to keep his viv warm enough? Right now the cool side is running 72-74 & the warm side around 82. Is that warm enough? He seems to hang out on the cool side except after meals so I guess he thinks he's fine but I'm a noob so knowledge welcome!

Blessed be,
B

I was wondering the same as you not long ago, so I ran a search on "ambient temp" and the generally conclusion seemed to be that as long as you're providing a warm spot, the ambient temp is not very important. Unless, of course, your house is very very cold.

The cool sides of my snakes' vivs are all around 71 degrees, warm side at ~85. No problems whatsoever.

My snakes are in a cold basement in Northern Saskatchewan where it gets cold like 40-50 below at times so I use uthm and heat lams to heat the air so far so good..
