uth - t'stat question

zoo med's uth for 10 gallon tanks says it will raise the ambient air temp at the floor level 5- 10 degrees - if my room air is @70 on average and it raises it to @80 which is it's max capacity by their testimony then why would a t'stat ever be needed - i'm not a tightwad - just trying to figure out the need

It may raise the ambient ('air') temperature only around 10 degrees, but the contact temperature (temperature of the aquarium glass) will be extremely high.

My room is always 70-75 degrees. I tested a zoo med 10 gallon UTH w/out a thermostat once (no snake in tank at the time) and it reached 110 degrees before I turned it off...probably would have went higher.

uth - t'stat

thats what i would have guessed - th'x - can you recomend a uth - t'stat combo - specifics please - manafacturer, seller, etc - i'm that close to being able to order the snake

I have zoo med UTH's. As far as the thermostat, you can rig up a cheap rheostat by using a light dimmer switch, this reduces the power of the UTH, but requires a bit of trial and error to get it to the right temperature. These also aren't quite as useful if your house temperature varies a lot.

I like digital thermostats myself. I use a Ranco thermostat which you either have to rig up yourself http://www.reptilebasics.com/Ranco-ETC-111000-p-16171.html , or you can buy them already pre wired http://www.reptilebasics.com/Ranco-ETC-111000-Pre-Wired-p-16172.html.

Herpstats are also widely used

I've also heard some people using this analog thermostat, but I prefer digital

I also use my thermostat in conjunction with a probe thermometer, because thermostats can fail. I use a probed thermometer from wal mart and place the probe directly on the glass above the UTH. For even better accuracy an infrared thermometer is preferred.

they definately do go higher, I have the same mini one and while testing mine(no snake yet) it hit 121 degrees. I use a lowes dimmer to control mine.
