found a baby Corn on my neighbor's back porch!

I am having some trouble uploading the picture on here with my phone, but I will post the picture when I get home. We get a knock on our door about 9pm last night, we live in a duplex and it was our neighbor, she looked a little panicked and when I opened the door she said "You guys like snakes right? because there is a snake on my back porch!". Of course my husband and I always get excited over the prospect of a snake so he grabs his gloves and I go back to look at it and we find a baby hatchling corn. It appears to be a normal although a very colorful one. It did not even snap at me when I picked it up, we think it was eating bugs on the porch. So we put this little guy in a secure cage and are going to buy him a pinky this evening. :licklips:I hope he eats well for us.

A little background, I first found this forum back in 2005 when I bought my first hatchling. It is thanks to this forum that that hatchling is a happy 6 year old full grown corn.

Cool! I've found corns a couple times- young adults. It seems so odd to see something you view as a "pet" crawling around out free! I don't have that same reaction with any other snake...

Picture!

Here is the picture we took last night and he just ate his first pinky with no problems. I am actually pleasantly surprised at how well he ate. Does this look like a normal to you guys? If you look at my avatar it is a picture of my other corn from when he was a hatch-ling and he is an Okatee. My Okatee has a red background and checkered underbelly. This one has grey background and a checkered belly.

yes we are keeping him! He ate his first pinky, I thought I already posted a reply but I don't see it, weird. Anyway he ate well and he is in a nice little 5 gallon tank with a couple of hide boxes and UTH, and water of course. I am keeping him on papertowels for now to moniter for any mites or infections. Any other advice for taking in a wild?

I've came across some of the Eastern Milk Snakes here which look very similar to Corns... tried to keep it but it wouldn't have anything to do with anything I tried to feed it so I released it.... shame too... it was a very pretty snake.

the pet store advised us that if it didn't feed to go ahead and release it. The little guy is very active when we handle him. I haven't handled him since he has eaten though, I usually wait 48 hours. I am going to make sure we handle him every day so that he will calm down a bit. Our house is pretty loud too so I put him in the garage last night so that it will minimize his stimulation. I am in the process of getting a new setup for my adult corn. I am going to set up a double stand with a fish aquarium on top and a snake viv on the bottom. He is in a 55 gallon right now. Eventually I am going to have a second set up like that for this snake as well with a 29 gallon fish tank on top and a 20 gallon long on the bottom. I think it will be very pretty. Of course he will move from the little 5 gallon up to the 10 next and eventually to a 20 so I have time for that.

update: so we fed this guy one pinky on the 12th and tried to handle him a few days later and he literally latched onto my finger while I was holding him and started gnawing. So, we then fed him 2 MORE pinkies on the 18th, because he is relatively long and thin and while my husband was handling him yesterday he was continually striking. This is truly a wild corn. We let him go last night out in the wooded area behind our yard. I hope he does well, but I really didn't feel that I could justify keeping him. At least he has a full belly :)

(Sounds like 90% of my CB hatchlings this year!)

Living in Florida, if you brought home every cool snake your house would soon be full.

Oh, he is beautiful! He is one I would buy in a store! Congrats! I wish I had some advice for you on taking in a wild. But I am a novice still, but I do wish you the best of luck!

I know hatchlings can be nippy, I remember when my 6 year old was a hatchling, he could get nippy at times, but once i started handling him he would chill out. This one continued to strike even while holding him for a few minutes. I just felt like it was the best thing to let him loose. He was very pretty, but i really don't NEED another snake, lol. we have already given one corn to my neighbors 3 boys, and a ball python to my brother-in-law in an effort to downsize.
