Black rat

My brother took this pic today while riding on a bike trail north of Cincinnati. I've never seen a snake with this many "undulations", if that is a good term. Could there be something wrong with it?

No, nothing wrong with it. I've seen a LOT of black rat snakes do the same thing when they get startled or feel at unease. Probably some sort of defense mechanism where they are preparing to flee.

I've seen them do it mostly when in open spaces, like crossing a road. I think it's to break up their outline and appear more as a stick than a potential meal for any aerial predators that happen to spot them.
