Back in Black!

New snake arrived today. The only non-corn I own (so far :). This inky-black beauty is an unsexed '07 Mexican Black Kingsnake. S/he's about 3' long, and as shiny a beastie as I've ever laid eyes on. Feisty, too! Bit me first thing out of the bag. Silly thing--doesn't it know that I'm used to macaw bites? Little snakie (not talking huge ol' pythons or hots, here!) just aren't that scary! LOL! He'll figure it out. Poor guy, I think he was just scared, for he also musked. Nothing that some consistent handling won't fix--and even if it doesn't, I LOVE this snake! Haven't named it, yet. Can't decide whether to name it some version of "Nathair Dubh" (black snake, or, literally, snake black in Irish), or something simple and cute, like "Inky". Time will tell :). Anyway, let me introduce my new friend. I hope you like him as much as I do:

Here's a digitally manipulated version of the same pic, so you can see his features a bit better:

And some more, just out of the box:

"Dubh" is beautiful. And yeah, after macaws, colubrid bites just aren't intimidating. A friend of mine used to own a Scarlet named Blake. Now that was an intimidating bite! Blake could probably amputate a finger if he wanted to!

It takes a very brave--or stupid--person to keep a Scarlet. I have 3, plus 4 Scarlet hybrids! Wonder which one that makes me? *grins*

Yeah, they can give a nasty bite. My worst bites have come from one of my Scarlets, Ceilidh, who loves the Mama more than life itself, but just can't help himself, sometimes....

The GW and Hy could literally break an arm with their bites. Thankfully, they're not generally inclined to such behavior. Scarlets just use biting as part of their communication technique, I think :).

Very pretty Mrs. Z. I love MBKs and really want one myself. Did you get him/her from a breeder? I do NOT need another snake, but those guys are very hard to resist and you've got me contemplating how to go about getting one again, lol. I love how shiny his belly is too.

I found him/her on Fauna Classifieds, Tara. I think the original owner bred it. I got it from the man's brother, who "inherited the guy's snakes". Why he "inherited" them, I didn't ask. Probably something that's none of my business, frankly. If the guy is in jail or died, the new owner probably won't want to talk about it, anyway....

Too bad you're so far north in WA. Our area CL has one listed, with habitat, for a very reasonable price. I've actually inquired, but haven't heard back. May be that it's already sold. I wouldn't be surprised!

Yeah, I think so. Blake regarded me as a part-time member of his "flock" so I never sustained any major injuries, just communicative bites, but I was well aware he could take off a finger if he truly wanted to. However, he was so enchanting when he flirted that it was hard to resist him! If I was a stay-at-home I think I would like to own a macaw or an African Gray.

Macaw and Greys--opposite sides of the parrot spectrum! The party animals and the intellectuals. I have a friend who has both--plus cockatoos--the punks & rappers of the parrot world! LOL!! That makes for an interesting household :).

Yeah, it is rather the 2 extremes, isn't it? But I like them for different reasons. Adding cockatoos is amusing, I've only met one but it was really sweet and LOUD! And does your friend allow them all to mingle as a flock?

Thank you!

And, Betsy, the 'caws and cockatoos at my friend's house do NOT share play time together. They hate each other, in fact! So they get out to play in shifts :).
