New to Snakes

Hi, I/we are very new to snakes. My son was rewarded for his good behavior/ability to keep his room up keep for 3 weeks so I caved in and bought him a corn snake. Which he has been asking for, for as long as I can remember. I have never owned any sort of reptile so would appreciate any tips/feedback possible.

Tori Vega our corn snake is now 9 weeks old, has been fed a pinkie, and now it looks like her eyes are turning a blueish color/hazy looking. And from all I've read could be that she's going to be shedding.

Couple questions I have...

1. Does it hurt to get bit?
2. She was fed 5 days ago, if she's about to go through shedding should I feed her tonight like planned or wait?
3. Will she be more aggressive when she's going to shed? (in other words should myself and my son age 7 avoid handling her at this time)

Thanks for any and all help that you guys could provide. Seem's like Tori is turning into more my pet than his!! I really like her!!

I am also new to owning snakes nut don't feed them when shedding you will just wast the mice my wouldn't eat when he was shedding and make sure you have a heat pad (uth) not a heat lamp and also make sure the viv is locked securely my snake escaped last night

Welcome to the forum! Let me try to answer your questions:

1. Is your snake a baby? A nip from a baby shouldn't really hurt. Even if the corn snake is bigger, it is not typical for them to bite, but not dangerous if they do.

2. Personally, on snakes that are about to shed, I ususally wait to feed them until after they do shed, because they are likely to refuse food at that time and more likely to regurgitate their food if they do actually eat.

3. Her senses will be dulled when she is in shed, so yes she likely will be more grumpy than usual if handled, and I would leave her alone at this time.

Thanks Wendy that is some helpful information!

We purchased her on 08/20/2010 and at that time the breeder stated she was between 6-8 weeks, so we've had her a week today.

I have a 20gal tank with a secure lid, along with a UTH, water bowl, and cave for her to hide in.

Do you have a hiding area for yours in the cool area of the tank too? or just on the warm side?

I have the hide on the warm side and on the cooler he hides under the water bowl but I still need to find this little guy so he can hide in his tank

Well mine is only a baby and he eat when in blue. He shed and eat again just try it and if she/he does not eat then done feed him in blue again it is really simple. Where are you getting you pinkies from.

The breeder that sold her to me gave me a couple to get us through the first few weeks and I can always go back there and get more.

Tori Vega our corn snake

I feel like such a dork for actually knowing where this name comes from  Hey, I can't help it, I come home from work and turn on spongebob, and then I generally just leave it on that channel for noise in the background when I am doing other things, and that Tori show comes on

Anyway, getting bit from a baby does not hurt. Sometimes I don't even realize they bit me until after they've already let go. It feels kind of like velcro.

Zoologygirl that would be my son for you! I didn't realize it till the next day when it was on tv!

That's good to know that it doesn't hurt too bad. I think that is my biggest fear, almost wish she would just bite me and get it over with!

Hello & welcome! My snakes will sometimes eat while they are in blue & sometimes they won't, it depends where they are in the cycle. But because they do refuse sometimes, I don't feed them when they are in shed. There is a small chance that it can cause problems & going without for a few days won't affect them. My .02 anyway. The first time I got bit by a snake, he had actually bit me 7 or 8 times before I really realized what he was doing, it barely felt like anything at all. This was my young garter snake, who is about the size of my corns when I first got them at about 13" but I imagine that a corn isn't much worse. I've had my first corn since 11/9/08 & haven't been bitten by them yet.

Tavia - What do you mean when you put ".02"? I've seen this a lot but am not sure what it means.
