my first corn snake

GREETINGS folks!

i joined about a month ago so i could do a little research
before i got my first corn snake.

i was planning on get my first corn snake from a breeder but
...my co-worker had gotten one for her son as a gift and he
ended up not being interested in it so she offered the little
guy to me. he's a anery...

he came in a 10g tank with a small heating pad, decor, and
water bowl. i put the heating pad on the left side and put a
small tea bag box above it to use as a temp hide. on the right
side i have another temp hide made out of a toilet paper roll.

at the moment i only have one thermometer in the tank, which
is located kinda in the middle (it came like that). it's reading at
80 but i'm not sure how accurate it is since it's not exactly above
the heating pad.

this enclosure is TEMPORARY. i plan on getting a 30g or 20g
for him in the next few days. and i plan on using the FAKE ROCK idea
for some hides and a waterfall set up.

she said he is about 5 to 6 months old. she told me she was feeding
him twice a week every wednesday and saturday. would it harm him
if i just start feeding him every sunday instead?? also i read some
where that the problem with baby corn snakes is keeping them
hydrated. could lightly misting him with a spray bottle help with that?

any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. thanks (^o^)=b

When they're that little you can feed them every 5 days. When I first picked up mine, I did feed him twice a week but only when he was on pinkies. Then I went every 5 days, now I feed every 7 days. You can feed your little one 1-2 pinkies every 5 days and then eventually bump up the prey size when your snakie gets bigger. A good guide line to follow is the Munson Plan (just search in the forums). It is strictly a guide line you don't have to follow it perfectly. You can make your own adjustments if necessary. The set up now looks nice, and your snake has very nice color and markings. Congratulations on your pride and joy. I just recently joined this forum and everyone is so wonderful on helping out and being informative. I have learned so much from everyone! Good Luck!

Taking a better look at the snake you maybe able to get away with 2 large pinkies or a small fuzzy! But you know your snake best. Around that age I was feeding mine fuzzies!

It sounds like your temp reader is a stick on, is this correct? If so, try to invest in a digital thermometer because they are a lot more accurate. Also, the 10 gallon is fine for now. Too big of a cage might scare a baby unless you have a lot of hides for him to sneak into at a second's notice. And, the hides you have now may turn out to be your snake's favorites. There's no hurry building or buying new ones if he uses the ones you have now.

Feeding once a week is just fine. Some would say twice a week is power-feeding (feeding too much to make the snake grow faster). Sarah gave good advice but I wanted to add that you should try one pinkie a week and see how quickly the bump goes away. It might be a good idea to get a gram scale to better monitor the weight. Remember, feel free to ask tons of questions. That's what we're here for!

Scale = great investment

I finally received a scale this week! They are great to have, I got a really cheap one off of ebay for $7 including shipping (i won a bid). But you can get them pretty much any where between $20-$40 depending on the brand or store. My guy's big butt weighs roughly 220 grams @ 15 months old!

Hey i.r.nekol,

First, get a rheostat or T-stat on that heat pad because it will get hot enough to harm your snake.

Second, a digital thermometer with a probe is a good idea. Wal-mart has them for cheap.

Third, if you wish to feed once a week that is fine. I only feed once a week and the snakes do not care.

Fourth, you live in Austin, TX you do not need to worry about humidity unless you do something stupid like use a light. The only time you are going to have trouble is in winter because of the heater in the house and in Austin I doubt that will be a problem.

awesome! thanks guys for all the advise...i'll try feeding him on sunday and
watch how long it takes for his bump to go away if it's before the 5 day mark i'll
probably end up feeding him again.

oh and thanks Sarah for the ebay idea...i just found a nice digital scale for about
10 bucks. i'll probably pick it up and the new tank. but i'll start working on the
FAKE ROCK project in the next couple of weeks since there really isn't much of a
rush to move him into a bigger place until he gets a little bigger XP

also does anyone think the idea of misting the snake with a spray bottle will be
helpful with keeping him hydrated??

Just keep a fresh filled water bowl to keep him hydrated. The snake will drink when he wants too! The only time u should really mist is when they're in blue & about to shed! Or create a humid hide for them!

ok will do ~.^!

oh and i was thinking about making a spagnum moss hide for him to keep in the tank all the time...does anyone know where i can get some??

Petco & Petsmart for sure...maybe cheaper online? Or your local pet store. I use loose coconut fiber bedding (comes in bricks also). Anyways, I just moisten the area above the uth that is directly under the hide (humid hide). Also when mine is in blue & b4 shed I soak him in room temperature water for 10 minutes a day. He always sheds perfectly (in one piece)!

You can mist the snake everyday when it is in a shed cycle. You can bath the snake when it is in a shed cycle but you don't have to. I don't bath any of my snakes. I just spray them a few times before they shed and everything goes fine. I wouldn't suggest a humid hide all the time. Dampness causes bacteria and too much moisture will cause scale rot.

Always during shed....only time... ;-)

Hey i.r.nekol,

The cheapest place to get spagnum moss is Wal-mart, or Lowes in the garden center.

If you what to mist the tank everyday you can, but I am telling you that in Austin the humidity is high enough you do not need too.

As for hydrated, like Sarah1228 said keep fresh water on the cool side and he will drink when he wants to and do not be surprised if you never see him drink.
