I would like to start a colony of african soft furred rats but can't find any locally. Is there any place that ships them? preferably on the west coast.
Not unless you are willing to pay a LOT of money for them. Delta Dash is the only service that will ship rodents and I believe that it starts at $179 and requires vet paperwork and other hoops to be jumped through to ship them.
It is my understanding that rodents can only be shipped by air. And that you have to meet them at the airport. In other words, you usually can't pack them in a box and ask a courier service or USPS to deliver the box.
At least that's what all the hamster/gerbil/and hedgehog breeder websites I've seen say.
Your best bet is to locate a breeder in your state who does deliveries. You may want to contact a zoo and ask who they get there feeders from (that's how I found someone to do live rodent deliveries in my area). A local show could also be a route to follow to find them live.
Permits and vet checks are usually only for shipping across the boarder...If the crate is ok and they can't get out they should accept them. I no when bringing them in to Canada from the states they don't need any kind of permits(atleast for rabbits, g-pigs and such..)But I've never shipped them in by air.. It it quite pricey to ship rodents tho..

I found one place that is selling tri'o for $100 then I would have to pay the outrageous shipping. There are no zoo's around here or reptile shows.
I guess I'll hit up all the petstores and see if they can order some for me, maybe I'll get lucky.
