Striped Amels (DUW)

Mrs InsaneOne

I See Snakes...
We had these two out today, cleaning water dishes, and I asked Tim to snap a few pics of them because the difference between them has always amazed me. I'm not 100% certain that they are full siblings, but they did both come from the same breeder and were purchsed at the same time at one of the reptile shows (Pomona most likely) we went to last year.

First up, is Sediment (aka Knott Boy) in a relaxed state:

A few close ups:

Then we have one nice one from today of Riverstone (or just River):

And a few of her from last month:

These last three being taken before the new camera...

More pics coming..

And that brings us to the first ever set of photos of these two side by side. We've attempted it before, but the pics never really came out clear enough for posting. Both of them are very active snakes, but when together their speed seems to be multipied twofold. Anyway, here are the pics:

And one close up of both thier heads... still squirming mind you.. lol

Thanks for looking!

Jenn

I'm going to try and take a few more of them both tonight and see if I can't get some really clear ones with good color. These photos just don't do justice to River's brightness or Sediment's pale ground colors where the stripes fade out.

Jenn

Beautiful stripes there (I admit, I'm one of those "stripe fans"); nice ventral picture too. I think your new camera can do them justice - bring 'em back out!

the brigther one is the female, and the almost buttery looking the male right?

thats strange because i got 1.1 cb 06 and the female is really bright (just like yours) and my male is lighter , not that red. (mine are het. caramel, yours too?)

hypolavenders for example are known to have better coloured males, maybe in amel stripeds the females are looking better :D

'Sediment' appears to be half hypo, literally.

He definitely has a really nice 'wash' to the latter half of his body.

Beautiful snakes indeed.

Trevor

Thank you for all the comments! I'm going to post a few more pics and then I'll make some specific replies! :)

First up, is more of River, though she looks a bit too red in these pics and it was because of the light and I forgot to take the polarizer (sp?) lense off the camera for the feeding shots. *Blonde here  *

Anyway, here she is:

Next up is some more of Sediment, including some close ups of his head/neck/shoulders (do they have shoulders??) and his tail end nearly side by side.

The next couple of posts will have Knot-boy in all his glory (feeding time) as well as a pic of River's own calm, slow, and excitement free meal by comparison.

Jenn

Ok, this pics are pretty graphic for those who don't like watching feeding time. Also, before anyone comments, yes he was fed live, and yes it was stunned before given to him. All but 6 or 7 of our snakes will eat both live and F/T (the rest prefer just F/T while a handful refuse all F/T). We suppliment the mice we breed ourselves with frozen mice (or frozen rat pinks/pups for those who prefer them) so that when our colonies aren't producing we still have plenty to offer the snakes. We don't live close enough to a reliable source of feeders, so we do what we have to do to feed the snakes. Oh, and ALL live (or F/T) feedings are 100% supervised from start to finish to guard against preventable injuries should a snake not be hungry.

That said, here are the pics, starting with Knot-Boy (Sediment):

I tried to get him from every angle, just to show how insane he is when he coils. And actually, this is one of his more milder feedings, as he usually has his head wrapped up underneath his coils with the mouse.

Here's River's boring feeding shot by comparison:

I guess that about wraps up the pics for these two... Thank you so much for looking, and I'll be answering some of the earlier replies now.

Really nice stripes! Riverstone is Hot
Thanks Mike! It's not often our critters rank the full 3 cools! :D

They look great. I wish it was warm enough here to take pictures outside.
Thank you! Yeah, the outdoor weather this time of year is one of the few benefits that living in So Cal has! lol

Awesome, I love that first stripe.
It's so hard to pick a favorite between the two because they are at completely different ends of the stripe spectrum. He's a huge pig though, eats anything we give him!

Thank you for the compliments! It's hard to spend quality time with all of our critters and I'll be the first to admit that a few of them get more camera time then the rest. Since we picked up the new cam, it has been easier to capture both of these two much easier, so you'll most likely be seeing more of them then in the past! :)

Yep, that's correct! :)

We don't know the complete genetics behind these two, though we are making plans to test them out once they are mature enough to breed. The most obvious pairing would be with each other, but I've been seriously thinking about using Knot-boy for a striped blood project - looking to further reduce the pattern giving the snakes a more solid red (or orange) color. I know there are some out there like that already, but I don't have any yet. lol

I don't think that is true of the amel stripes. There were a couple of male striped amels at the table the day we purchased these two that looked a lot like river, we just couldn't decide at the time, which pattern we liked best, so we brought home one of each paired. lol. There was even or female that had a vanishing stripe like Sediment, though her's wasn't nearly as nice of a pattern as his!

His pattern has also been slowly fading out as he grows older too, which is really nice to see! As I mentioned in an earlier reply above, I'm thinking of using him in a diffused/bloodred project.

Thanks again everyone!

Jenn

Thanks for posting those pics MrsInsaneOne!

That knot-boy certainly lives up to his name doesn't he! Looks like one big ball of snake and mouse......reminds me of the old cartoons with a cat and dog etc fighting and all you see is a blur with an occasional head or foot sticking out... LOL

My guy is more like river - he hardly ever constricts.... the one time i can remember though(first time he got a fuzzy) he dragged it all around his feeding tub, bodyslammed it a couple of times, whacked it against the side just to make sure then started munching...
