Heating Plastic Tubs

airenlow

hope is not a strategy
I am going to be using two 6.5 quart Rubbermaid tubs to house hatchlings. If I stack them will the heat from the UTH radiate up to the top tub? I haven't gotten the UTH yet or I would have just tested it. The UTH is also big enough that I could put the tubs side by side to share it if they can't be stacked. Thanks!

Hey Josh,

they'll be better off side by side. The temp difference can be quite a bit in a cool room. Especially with that wind blowing off Erie...burrrrrrr!

Thanks Danny! Guess I'll be setting em side by side then. I keep the apartment pretty cold so I wont risk it. They are only staying in the tubs til xmas then they will have their own 20L vivs...unless the tubs work great

Make sure there is air flow around the heat pad. Stacking them with a UTH in the middle can cause problems if they are too tight together without air flow. Plus the loweroneor themiddle ones will be a lot hotter

What is wrong with not having airflow round the heatmat, i had changed from the heat mat in the tank to putting it underit.
Marg.

OK I've got a new issue. Even with the thermostat the UTH is only going down to 92.3*F. I have the tubs sitting on little rubber feet so they are off the UTH about 1/2 an inch. So, I've pulled the plug for tonight. Should I get a piece of plexi glass or should I lift them up higher?

Also, the UTH isn't turning off. My other one (exact same model) will turn on for a few minutes then shut off for a few. This one was on for 2 hours and never turned off. Any ideas?

Did you try to set your thermostat to a lower temp? The thermostat might be broke...

What about Flexwatt or heat cable??? Anyone have opinions on using these?

I use flexwatt. I control the temp by using a single pole rotary dimmer. Seems to work just fine when I place a tub on it. Takes a bit though to set the temp just right and I keep my snake room at a constant temp also.

If it was me I would take the thermostat back to where you bought it and trade it out for a different one... Also what size tubs and what size heat mats do you have? That might make a difference...

I was planning on getting flexwatt for my tubs... Did you do all of the wiring yourself or did you have it done for you???

I did the wiring myself. It isn't that difficult, but I would suggest if you are not comfortable to do wiring on your own, have someone who understands electrical do it for you. Better safe than sorry. I bought the flexwatt from The Beanfarm. I use 4" and have it parallel wired. It does come with instructions.

Thankyou for your help... I'm thinking of having the strips I need prewired just because it's free and they know what there doing... I am alway willing to learn how to do something new but I really don't feel like burning my house down if you know what I mean... :)

You're welcome. Good idea to have it pre-wired. As I said, always better to be safe than sorry.
