Housing a snake for a while..

I REP VW
hey guys! well last night i was looking at craigslist and found a guy that was selling some snakes. i noticed it said he was leaving for the air force and had toget rid of his snakes, i also noticed that he lives in the same city as me.. so i said that i would house his 2 corns for him till he got back if he wanted, but he sold them already, but he has 2 black milks, an eastern king, and an andean milk left. i offered to take in one of them for him and said ok.

so my question is do any of you know anything about the normal temperment or anyother speecial info that i need to know on these snakes? looking for first hand info, not stuff from websites.. any recommendations on which one to take??

thanks:)

I've got a Black Milk, and they are pretty simple to take care of. Mine is at room temp (the temps should be between 72 and 78 degrees F. They can have heat, but it's not necessary, and it can stress some Black Milks out.) and he does fine. I don't know how big the ones he has are, but if they're adults, males usually get one jumbo mouse every 10-14 days. I'm not 100% sure about females, but I believe they can be fed the same unless they're being prepped for breeding.
They are the coolest snakes i've ever seen, and I definitely recommend picking them up if you can. :) Mine (seemingly) likes being out of his viv and exploring all the time, and i've heard the same from other Black Milk keepers. If you like having a snake to handle, that would be the one i'd recommend.
Good luck and keep us updated! :D

I thought it was crazy too. Its nice your have offered to take one in, but you may get attached you know why not just buy it? Whichever you decide do a ton of research so you can give this guy great care while his owner is away, and if your bad at saying goodbye to animals I would ak if you can buy him instead.

thanks for the info. the ad doesnt say the sex, but one of the BM's is about 5ft, and the other is 3ft i believe.

That was really sweet of you. He must be so relieved.

thanks, i think he was happy to hear of somebody near by that could house his little friends. he seemed pretty fond of his bigger Black Milk.

Haha i would love to BUY them, but i still live at home so i have to go by my moms rules. 3 snake limit(started out at a 1 snake limit). so i thought this would be a good way to have another snake, without actually OWNING one :)

just as an update.. im getting two snakes now.. the larger black milk(5ft) and the andean milk snake(3ft). im getting them tomorrow around 6, hopefully i can get some pics up here!

I think that's so awesome of you, Rick! Not only must he be very happy to have someone to care for his snakes, but it gives you a chance to increase your experience with different types as well. Win/Win!

thank you very much! Thats one of the reasons why i did it. im kinda glad i didnt just get the corns..(although i do love corns!) gives me a chance to branch out and learn new things about new animals! also it gives me a reason to have more reptiles in the house.. haha. he said that both snakes are very doctile and love to be out of their vivs. he is also giving me enough mice to last the whole year, for my snakes(not the ball though, that wouldd have been alot.) and his! which i though was very nice :)

That is really awesomee you have the chance to help someone out. :) Can't wait to see pics of your new house guests.

Such a great thing you are doing, and you probably don't even know how much it means to him. When he gets back, he might be clinging for every bit of home he can get ahold of, and his pets may be the best thing in the world.

Thats awesome of you to do for this soldier Rick! I bet he is estatic knowing atleast 2 of his snakes will be there waiting for him when he gets home.
That's pretty nice of him to supply you mice for your corns and his snakes for the whole year.
Can't wait to see pics.

Will there be a way to send him e-mail updates with pics? I can just imagine how comforting that woud be...

I just picked these guys up! very doctile snakes, just like he said. ill post some pictures of them later.

Hey Mike, remember FYI on the black Milk, keep them a bit cooler and keep them in a cooler area in the house during the summer months. They do not like the heat.

Enjoy! :)

Those are nice looking snakes mike.
The andean will get big as well. Both of these snakes prefer cooler temps. I wouldnt go over 82 with them.

Both Andeans and Blacks get over 6 feet. Remember My big Male I had? He passed on, my herp room got to hot one summer and before I noticed him not doing well and I could move him. He passed. I learned my lesson the hard way.

Now as for keeping someone snakes. I have a corn here where someone swore she would pay me food and come every month to visit her snake. The only time I saw her was when she dropped it off. I have heard through the grapevine she wanted it back but that was after 2 years. Sorry at this point its mine. But good luck with these guys.
