I'm thinking about getting one in the future & had a few questions for those that might know. What is the minimum sized enclosure for 1, 2 or 3 of them? About how much gecko diet do they eat? Or how much are they likely to cost in general upkeep, say every month? Thanks for any replies & I'll probably think of a few more questions later.
 
I think the rule of thumb is 10gal per gecko however if housing a single adult it is recommended to use something closer to 20gal.

The CGD lasts a relatively long time. I bought the 2 part diet (1lb base, two flavors @ 1/2lb each) and it should last about a year. It cost approximately $45 for it, so monthly it comes out to $3.75 for CGD. I feed crickets once per week and for my 6 geckos it costs less than $5 for all the crickets. Calcium supplement will last a long time and maybe costs $6? So maybe $25 monthly maintenance?

It's the intial setup that seems to be the most costly, but I've seen people make decent enclosures from plastic tubs and the like for $20.
 
In your opinion, do you think it is best to start of with one, see if I like them first or go ahead & get two to start with? That's one of the things I'll have to decide, probably will have one shipped & it's easier to swallow a $40, $50 shipping cost the more animals you get, especially where I'm fairly likely to want one more. I've read a number of care sheets, but haven't looked at any books, which would you recommend? Thanks!
 
1/2 pound of diet for two geckos will last you more than a year trust me and costs less then $20 if your just using the regular one prt diet. They do not NEED insects, but they like them once a week or once every other week.

I use tall plastic sweater box tubs from the container store which cost less than $10 and bottle caps for feeding dishes which are free,lol You leave the food in the cge for 2-3 days mny people waste food left and right replacing it every night and the truth is they like it better the second night anyway.

If your getting more than one do not assume they will live together harmoniously- like a snake they are not social in nature always have a spare cage they do fight from time to time, hoard food, and bully each other.
 
Think I've pretty much decided on just one to begin with, if I do get one. One of the reasons I liked them was that you don't have to feed them crickets. It's kinda dumb, but flesh colored feeder crickets are one of the things that give me the creeps. I would be able to feed crickets every now & then, but after the last few things I've had that needed them, I'd sworn never to get anything else that needed crickets. Do you think a female is better or a male? Or does it matter? Thanks for the replies!
 
Question of my own hope OP does not mind. What flavors do they tend to like/ not like the most?

the banana one is none of mines favs, but all of them love fig, cherry, and rose:)

Females get chunkier than males almost always, but other than that theres no major difference:)
 
I use the repashy 2 part diet for my gargoyles, I bought it from Supreme Gecko at a reptile show. I wanted cherry, because I hear it smells delish, but they were out. So I have passion flower. They seem to like it well enough, my only problem is that mine rarely seem to eat it on their own. When I offer it to them on my finger or out of the squirt bottle they gobble it up...put it in a dish and they're not interested :shrugs:

IMO I would go with a male if you want 1, however males should be housed alone...so if you want 2, then female it is. Although, in some cases even females can either bully or fight cage mates.

I have peach and banana and they seem to like both equally, maybe banana a little bit more so.

Pangeareptile is an AWESOME site and I am a regular on his forum as well. I purchased 60% of my crestie supplies from his site.
 
Ooh, crestie info! Haha, I could use some answers, too. You guys asked all the questions I can think of, though...

The only thing I have to contribute to this conversation is females lay eggs. I was skimming a couple of the crestie forums a while back (Pangea was one of them), and it seemed the main difference between getting a male or a female was the females will often lay infertile eggs once large enough, which might be a worry/hassle to the casual/inexperienced keeper. FWIW. =P
 
Update ... Going viv shopping is dangerous!

Went into the local Petco to see what they had for vivs, had been looking at different kinds online, Petco has not had Crested Geckos for at least a year, that I've seen, but what is there tonight? 6 Crested Geckos! One of which came home with with me! I wasn't sure this was a great idea, but my Mom was with me, she's no help at all, she was listing all the reasons I ought to go ahead & get this one, LOL. I'll have to see about getting some pics, the little one is absolutely beautiful!

Here's some pictures of the new addition. The light was not great, so I don't know if you can see good enough, but what would you call his pattern & color? I'm thinking he's tiger patterned & he's kind of a yellow color, but I'm certainly not very up on the terms, yet. He does have a few little dalmatian spots, too.

Thanks! Had thought either tiger or flame, I can't tell the difference in pics I've seen. But I'd joined the pangea forums a bit ago & the vote on there was flame, too.
 
I've got the little guy in an temp. plastic cage for the moment, but will be fixing up a 20gal long I have so it stands on one of the short sides, as I haven't found any vivs else where that are the dimensions I want. A permanent sweater box cage would be nice price wise, but I want a cage that looks really good too. I'll have to post pics of it when it's done. The crestie's name is Miami, my mom named it, she quite likes him. Thanks again for everyone's replies!
