Greetings and salutations folks!

I just got a lovely new anery yearling gal on Sunday so thought I should join the forums to learn from all you wise and wonderful folks.

I named her Liadhan <LEE ah dan> which means 'gray lady'. She devoured a fuzzy yesterday :) so I think she is settling down nicely. I have her in a 10 gallon at the moment but have intent to build a vivarium for her.

My only grumble right now about snake ownership is that the local pet stores charge $1.70 each for fuzzies!! Crazy when a live (ie pet) mouse is $1.50!! Now have to argue with myself over raising mice myself or finding some one to buy bulk from (the Mouse Man is only a province over and I hear they are good...certainly cheaper than two dollars a mouse!)

Look forward to 'meeting' you all and learning more about these lovely creatures.

With a smile,
Deb

hey welcome to the forum!!!! your corn is beautiful! to answer ur ? about getting cheaper feeders...i would recommend f/t(frozen/thawed) mice just cuz its cheaper and u can buy in bulk. raisin ur own feeders can get messy but is also economical. so its up to u. but because of the possibility of ur corn to getting injured i would try to wean her of live feeders, to fresh killed or f/t.

Since the OP made a distinction between the fuzzies she was buying and a live mouse sold at the shop, I think it's safe to assume she is feeding F/T.

Welcome! I'm not exactly in your neck of the woods, but I would definitely recommend buying from a bulk supplier. Maybe you can find someone to split an order if you don't need 100+ fuzzies, etc.

hey welcome to the forum!!!!
Thank you very kindly :)

your corn is beautiful!
Again, thank you very kindly. She isn't too keen on being picked up, but we are new to eachother so I am not too surprised by that :). Once picked up, she loves me - I am naturally very warm, most snakes think I am a great heat pad lol

I humbly apologize for the confusion! She is eating frozen/thawed at the moment. I don't believe in feeding live (sorry to any who do so - but I have seen some brutal damage done to very large snake by a rat that was not killed quick enough - his owner had fed live for years :( ).

I guess my comparing the cost of a frozen fuzzie to a live pet mouse is what threw you. Not my intention at all.

thanks again for the welcome ;)

Welcome! 1.70 I am guessing is in Canadian dollars. Which is almost the same in USD. Here, depending on where I go, Petsmart has 6 pinkies in a pack for 10.99usd. Or if I can get to the other store here, I can get pinkies for 1.40 each. So its not to far off.
Ordering in bulk does save money though if you can find a source online that can deliver to your area ( I dont know about Canadian feeder shops).
Have fun here and share pictures of your baby when you get a chance!

That is correct :).

Thank you for the welcome! Not sure I need 100 fuzzies (what -=is=- the freezer 'life' of meeses?) - that would last her a year lol at least. Then I would have to get more corns so the food wouldn't go bad... not that that would be a bad thing ;)

Ok... I am sure I can find it somewhere in the threads but I am going to cheat and ask here *forgive me* I understand that the 1.0 *snake* is expressing gender of said snake - which numeric is male and which is female?

Thank you again for the welcome ;)

That is crazy tho when compared to pet mice. CO or CO2 (which I hope is the preferred method of euth) isn't that expensive. They certainly aren't losing any money on those prices ;/ (not expecting them to lose money by any means...but really...)

Mouseman delivers country wide and isn't too expensive. I could probably get my son to pick me up a bag on the way home for a visit :)) and even save delivery.

Have fun here and share pictures of your baby when you get a chance!
I will. She just ate so I am trying not to bother her too much for a couple days...as well as let her settle. Maybe being overprotective lol. She is just so dang pretty *confesses to not being objective* I want to start snapping away ;)

0.1 Crazy Roommate
Ok...I thought I was the only one pet-crazy...but you mention the names of all the pets...but not the roomie? That's cold, man. Cold. *giggle*

o ok. i had it confused....well yea buying in bulk would be the way to go then.....and sounds like u have a source some wat close to u.

Hi Deb,

I'm up in Saskatoon and I have a 2-yr-old corn that we just got in January. I'm fairly new to the site myself. It strikes me we have a few Saskatchewanianianians here.

My little guy is on hoppers from the local pet store right now and growing fast. This spring when I get my taxes I'm planning to put in an order for sub-adults (and maybe a small bag of hoppers, if need be) with the Mouse Man. Let me know what you think if you order from him.

Welcome to the board :)

Liadhan came from Saskatoon :) - was up in your pretty city on Sunday ;)

I will do :). Maybe we can go halvers on an order and save some extra money ;). You wouldn't believe the critter run Sunday's trip was lol. We dropped rat food off in Moose Jaw, then picked up spiney mice in Mortlach to deliver to Saskatoon, picked up a lovely lavender corn and a bearded dragon to go to Mortlach and a cage and a couple aquariums to come to regina (as well as my lovely snake) :). So a trip that would normally have been 297 km (184.547 miles to those not metricized :) ) up and then again back ended up being just shy of 750 km all told (466 miles to the non-metricized)!! It was kind of fun :) really.

Welcome to the board :)
Thank you for the welcome. Certainly a friendly bunch ;)

Talk about traveling! I haven't been on a road trip that long since I was in the Air Force. How time flies. Enjoy the info you will find along with the personalities that are attached.

Hi Deb. Welcome to the forum. Canadian Mouseman is great to deal with. I have ordered from him for the last couple of years with no problem whatsoever. Let me know if you have any questions.

Welcome from the white not so North -- we have gotten way too much snow down here this year. If the little pic is any indication, your gal is GORGEOUS, but anyone here will tell you I am obsessed with gray/grey snakes, so what do I know?

Bulk buying of frozen is the way to go if at all possible, so much cheaper! If I only had 1 instead of 3, I would split an order with someone, but since I have 3 & expect massive expansion of snake population this year, I just order! Vacuum sealed mice (get a cheapish vacuum sealer) apparently keep a long time, from what I have read. And although most folks only feed double pinks, which your pretty girl is past, double fuzzies to use up the last of them would probably be OK, so you might not have a problem with leftovers.

Besides, you WILL get another corn snake. Resistance is futile. In the meantime, please do a photoshoot when Liadhan is ready for it. We lurve pictures!

Welcome to the forum. Here I have learned there are so many cool people in Saskatchewan. I thought all there was was woods and sasquatches.

Welcome Deb, to the Saskatchewan corner of the boards! I had to delurk to give my welcome and surprise at seeing so many of us Flatlanders on the boards. I have learned soso much from these folks!

I have to second Cat and others on ordering from Mouseman - I have nothing but good things to say.

I wanted to stop buying from commercial pet stores and give my money to local snake/feeder breeders. Truth be told, now that I have corns, I now notice snakes in sad conditions in those pet stores, and don't want to give them my business.

So, when are we going to have that Saskatchewan meet-up?

Arte

I didn't see anyone answer this but if they have or if you found the answer elsewhere, just double the info. 1.0 is male.... 0.1 is female.... 0.0.1 is unknown sex
