1 hatchling out of 41!

So yesturday my dad called and told me the one egg I had left in maine for him to look over for the week had hatched! I'm extatic! This was from gold dust het motley X amel stripe. The first clutch of 25 eggs completely died. Only one egg was good at day 60, but that one molded, too.

She laid another 16 eggs and only one made it to hatching. From my dad's description it seems like an amel motley. one out of 41. I'll post pictures as soon as I get them.

Wow what a little trooper!

If you haven't thought of a name you could consider Macleod (from Connor Macleod from The Highlander) - There can be only one!

:laugh01: Lol, I like that one, I used to watch that all the time when I was younger.

 Congrats on your new hatchling.

thanks guys, but some bad news. I did get some pictures a day or two ago, and the hatchling looks kinked. I'll be able to tell for sure in person on saturday, but I have to say I'm not 100% confident this guys gonna make it, not at all. My dad reports he's a little lathargic as well. I wish I was getting up there sooner to take care of this guy, even if that means culling it if necessary.

So this brings up a another question. I'm begginning to wonder if theis female amel stripe will produce good eggs next year. I had other eggs incubating right next to these, and they hatched out fine. The male is proven as well. What do you think? What are the chances this is just a fluke, or because its her first breeding year?

Sorry to hear that just about all the eggs were lost, and that the one little hatchling might be kinked. That can be so frustrating, especially when other clutches do just fine.

It could just be a fluke - or there might have been something off about the female this year. It's hard to say because it is her first year. I'd pamper her until she's back up to size, and try again next year. Either with the same male, or a different male, and see if she does better than.

Ok thanks for the input. I'll try her again next year. She's eating well now and pretty much back up to weight.

I did end up culling the kinked hatchling. It had a pretty bad head deformity, and It's tonge actually formed as a loop. It was pretty strange. Also, it had the smallest eyes I'd ever seen. Finally, it had a kink about 2 inches down from the head that was pretty extreme. Maybe it could have lived out a life, but I think it is very doubtful.

Only one? Wow, he/she is going to be special. Sorry about the lossess of the other eggs :(

Thanks for the concern!
