Hi all, we got our little corn (about 15 inches) on monday evening, and we were told he will need feeding on thursday. Ive followed advice given on here and have not handled him so he can settle in.

I want to feed him in a seperate tank, but whats the best way to aproach, take hold and keep hold of him. Also when hes finished eating, should i then put him instantly back in his viv or leave him for a while? For my last Q! the pinkie i got when i bought him had started to defrost when we got home, unsure what to do i put it in the fridge (3 days) will this be ok to use? I was told to feed him 1 a week.

Thanks Steve

Well, first try during the evenings, this is when they are most active, then you could try to get him from the side, i mean let him see your hand approach from the side and grasp him securely but gently. He will try to squirm away but with hand over hand approach you should fine. Once you have him out of the Viv they tend to clam down. But they will alway want to crawl away. At this point you can handle him and check for general heath. As for the feeding part. When you see that the snake has finish and starts to search around abit is when you can place him back into the Viv. There is no rush to this part. The pinky should be fine and you can feed a hatchling every 5-7days. Your call.

Good Luck

Ahh yes, that sounds like a good plan, hes often on the sides around 8ish, i will grab him then, see if hes a biter too!

Thanks a lot, i will let you know how i got on, Steve

If you own a hatchling, the "bite" will not hurt, if you feel it at all. You are more likely to jerk to the action than the bite itself.

I fed mine in the deli cup I bought her in for the first feed. From then on, I have always used a box with paper towels at the bottom. Early evening, snake+pinky=lump. If you watch your snake eat, you will start to know how far down the lump has to go for the snake to be "done". On my motley, i just count 10 back dots as that is where the lump has always stopped. Once the lump is at or just past the 10th back dot, I know she is ready to go back to her tank. I take the box to the cage and carefully pick her up just before the lump. After the snake is airborne, support the lump but don't squeeze or pick the Snake up by the lump. then set it in the tank. If you are using something as small as deli cup, you can just set the cup in her tank and let her come out at her will. There is no reason not to put your snake back once it is entirely finished with it's meal.

*hijacks* I'm going to try mine on a pinkie again tonight. The first time, I put it in the cup, but he didn't go for it (he was in his hide). I waved it in front of him, and he wasn't having any of it. So I thought tonight I could drop him in the cup with the pinkie, shut the lid, and not let him out until he's eaten it. Mwah ha ha. :D Waiting until he's slithering around, looking for prey isn't much of an option as he's taken to staying hidden pretty much 24/7. And while I know he won't starve, I still feel bad.

Are urates hard to find in aspen? I haven't specifically gone looking for any wastes from him, but I've never seen or smelled a thing in there. I hope he's drinking...

well we had him out for 10 mins, was really reasuring for us all i think! he ate the pinky rapidly with no problems.
after returning to his viv he hid straight away and has not come out since, when will he be likly to reappear?
thanks for your good advice, really helped.

In a couple of days, when he's done digesting.

I like to leave mine until he starts to look like he's looking for something else to do. usually he likes to streatch his jaw and upper body a bit after he eats, then starts to look around and move a bit. IMO that means hes done eating.

p.s. I know this thread is old... hopefully I wont get flamed and have to justify posting here...
