Can anyone tell me the results of this....... My wife has eczema, scratchs and sometimes bleeds a little, usually on the arms (from a little scratch type scrape). Can she handle a snake (5 months old), or if it finds the fresh wound would it trigger a bite???

Also, i am using a 24x12x16 glass reptile tank, locking screen on top, aspen mulch (about 3/4 to 1"), 8x8 substrate heater (desert wave s).
When i touch the substrate over the heater it is maybe a degree or 2 warmer than the rest of the tank, if i clear the substrate right off and touch the glass over the heater it is definately warmer, say 5-8 degrees. Is this set up okay?? Last night when i took Lava out of her tank her body seemed cold. However she was on the cool side of the tank.
Btw, i keep my house between 22 and 23 degrees all day, if this makes any difference.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

Well for the first part you could use rubber gloves because the snake might give her something. Just a thought there.

The second is your asking if the temperatures will be fine two degrees or so more than the tank with the substrate and with out it, it's five to eight degrees warmer?
Well.... What is the temperatures of the tank and that temptress changes with the room temperatures so there is no answerer to your question.
What you need to do is get a thermometer with an probe (indoor/outdoor type) and place the probe above the Uth and take your reading there. The temps should be 80-85 degrees on the warm side and 70-75 on the cool side.
This might help you too. http://www.cornsnakes.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28341

Good Luck

To answer the Eczema question. No it won't trigger a bite if shes bandagesd the bleed. If its a little bleed, just clean it up. I have extremly bad eczema and, it has never triggered a bite from any of my snakes.

You won't be able to tell what the temperature is by feeling it with your hand. Put a thermometer in your hand and you will find that your hand is close to 90 degrees Farenhiet. Anything cooler than 90 degrees will feel cool to you. Anything warmer will feel warm. So the temp you're feeling with your hand could be well above 95 degrees, which is too hot. And the snake will almost always feel cool in your hands because it's body temp will be anywhere from 70 to 80 degrees F.

Unless you're one of those people with cold hands :)

I get my digital thermometers at Walmart. You can get one that shows the temperature at the probe (which will be underneath the substrate), the temperature at the thermometer (which will be on the cool end), and the humidity, all for $11.

As for the open sores - consider the fact that the snake crawls through its own poop. I wouldn't let it touch an open sore.

A corn snake should feel a little cool. We are very warm blooded creatures! If the substrate, or underneath it, ever feels hot, it will burn a snake.
