2 New Snakeys Today???

Hi

Got my 2 new snakes a normal het amel male and normal het butter female. The male is a lively one he jumped out the tub when I put him in. The female was a little more docile I had to pick her up to get her in the tub as she wouldnt come out of the transport bag.

The only problem I have is i've got the heatmats and stats set up and the thermometers are still saying its not the right temps but the mats are feeling too hot I have turned them off for now as I don' want to burn them.

Any ideas guys i'm a little worried ?

What you need it the UTH on the outside of the viv. The thermostat probe in the center of the UTH, in the viv, attached somehow. The temp probe right next to the stat probe. All that under the hide on the warm side.

So you have that all set up, what does you thermostat read? Since you have the snakes, I would turn the thermostat all the way down, let it sit an hour, see what the temp reads. If you need to, turn it up a couple degrees, wait an hour, see what the temp is, adjust again. It is not unusual to take 24 hours to get everything settled at the temp you want.

i've had it on for 2 days 1st day i had mat outside tubs and temps wudnt reach above 75 so stuck them in the tubs and only reached 80 on full temp on stat. I have stat probe in warm end of tub but still doesnt want to heat up for sum reason.

Also i've turned mats of completely so as not to burn them

Sounds like your UTH is defective. I have a few ZooMeds and they reach well over 100 F when they are not regulated. You didn't happen to put it on the tank and then remove/move it, did you?

They have different brands in the UK than we do over here so I couldn't even begin to speculate on if one is functioning properly. The basices of set up are still the same.

I wouldnt of thought they were defective as both are causing me this problem. It may be because of my thermometers as they are not digital ?? They feel hot when I turn them up but thermometers are not reading a high temp.

What sort of thermometers do you have? The strip or dial types can be ten degrees out either way. You really need a digital one for accuracy.

Certainly as a rough guide, if the mats feel hot to you then they're too hot. They should feel lukewarm at most.
