2015 Breeding Project: Keegan x Kamalah! (tips appreciated!)

LauRuffian

Perpetual Newbie
After breeding my sweet girl Cleo for the last two years, I've decided to give her a break this year. One, she's about to turn 13. Two, as a normal het amel, I recognize her offspring are not particularly marketable (though we had no problem selling both clutches).

So! This summer we bought a pair off a fellow poster here, with high hopes (and outright excitement) over the varied, beautiful babies they will make.

The male is Keegan, a 4yro hypo vanishing stripe het lavender:

GOT to love that weight, eh? :dgrin:

And the female is Kamalah, a 4yro lavender Aztec het hypo het stripe:

Yup. So eager to see their babies.

Now--to get them to MAKE babies...

Since Kamalah shed a couple of days ago, I figured maybe we could give it a try. I put her shed skin in Keegan's tank, and he found it verrrrry interesting, sniffing it with great intrique. I then put the two of them in a breeding tub, and while Keegan definitely was very interested in her, she wanted no part of him. After 15min or so, I returned them both to their tanks to try again another time.

Keegan says, "Heyyyyy, bay-bee..."

Kamalah says, "NOPE. I'd like to go home now."

I recognize it's early in the season, but I'm eager, which means I'm also a bit anxious. My big concern, of course, is that they WON'T breed. Suggestions on when I should try again and possibly any changes to the approach? FTR, I did not brumate either of them, but that was never an issue with our former breeding pair. Each time, those two readily bred, but the confirmed breedings weren't until April.

Here's hoping for successful breeding and beautiful babies for everyone this season!

I'm not a breeder (maybe one day) but I've read that some people put them together when it rains. Seems to be a more romantic atmosphere?

Very pretty pair! I'd just keep pairing them once or twice every week until you see a lock up. I start pairing mine in Jan but usually the girls don't have any interest until Feb. One of my girls this year has bred at least twice but the other is still playing hard to get. They weren't brumated either.

Oooh! Hypo, Hypo lavender, lavenders, normals, and some of those will be stripes!! That's going to be an amazing clutch!

(thinking that a lavender stripe would be awfuly nice...)

We tried for a Valentine's pairing for these two, but alas, Cupid was not with us. Keegan was excited enough to, erm, show off he's most definitely male  ... but Kamalah returned his few attempted advances with rapid dartings away of NOPE. *sigh* We shall try again in a week-ish. :)

So, hubby paired them again today while working in his classroom. He didn't watch them too closely in their first few minutes, but said that when he separated them Kamalah seemed completely uninterested--trying to get away from Keegan--but Keegan had semen (for lack of better description) oozing out of him. Kamalah showed no such signs of, uh, leakage.

Hubby thought Keegan may have experienced something akin to premature ejaculation, but does that even happen in corn snakes? I'm wondering if they locked up early on and he missed it.
