Typical vs. atypical

In a typical viv the heat mat would go on a side or bottom of the tank underneath. In your situation I would say your best bet is probably to place the heat mat inside the tank itself. You will want a very reliable thermostat to regulate the temp and also will want your heating source to be set up fully for about 24 hours before introducing the snake. I would use a nice layer of aspen bedding that is enough for the snake to burrow without getting too close to the mat. But if the temp is ok set right at 85 I doubt the snake will suffer any consequences that way. Another thing you could do is use a few layers of newspaper cut to the dimensions of the cage and layer them, placing heavy objects or hides on all the sides so the snake cannot burrow underneath. It is really your call as to how you want to place it inside but I think you really are limited as far as options other than that. Hopefully someone who designs vivs will be along shortly to help out more. But thats my best advice.

One of the points made in that thread is to use a very thin layer of ceramic tile on top of the cage bottom, and right above your uth so as to absorb the snake coming in direct contact of the mat.

There are a few more threads on this if you use the search feature and put in "wooden viv heating". Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

Heat mats go inside wooden vivariums. :) I use wooden vivs, and I drilled holes in the back, detatched the plug from the heat mat, pushed the wire through and reattached the plug. It's very simple and works well. Remember to connect to a thermostat, too. :)

I have the same kind of cage. Its wood, with two vents, a front glass door, and no hole for a heat mat. I use both bulb and heat mat. I just place the zoomed UTH inside, on the wood.

Don't forget that wood viv's hold heat really well, so they get warm fast. My tanks approx. 30 gallons, and I have a UTH meant for a 10 gallon tank. Adding that with the 50 watt bulb is more than enough to keep it hot, and thats in a room that stays at a consistant 64 degrees.
