50 gallon tank set-up

Just wanting to double check my set up. It's a 50 gallon tank (36w x 18d x 18h). Heavy metal grate for lids. Exoterra light with one white bulb and one yellow (no heat) set on a timer. Heat lamp on dimmer on left side, ambient temp at low 70's, UTH on left side, thermostat, infrared gun temp sitting at 83-86 measured on glass under substrate. Cool side measuring around 71-73.

I have the heat lamp because Pancake is set up in our basement, and it gets quite cold down there. I keep it turned low and check ambient with a digital thermometer with a probe and surface temps are taken with an infrared gun.

Three hides - one on hot above UTH, one on lower level on cool and another on the upper level on cool. The plan is to get some spanish moss or another plant for the right side.

Pancake spends her day in the hide on the upper level of the cool side, but definitely goes to the hot side at night. The substrate is nice and deep and she seems to like carving tunnels through it. It's fun to see what she's been up to.

Fantastic viv, really great use of the space. :) I'd love to do this kind of setup in a 75-125 for a trio or quad of garter snakes someday.

That's actually a pretty nicely done job.

The only suggestion I would give is to closely monitor the temps during the winter.

I live in an area which gets very Hot in the Summer, but then Very Cold in the winter, and I've had to run 2 heat pads. I keep one at about 85 degrees, and the other is set for about 73 degrees. Most of the time it never even kicks in, but on those bitter cold days it can get 67 or 68 in the house, and that's just too cool for a pet snake. Your "Ambient Temps" will closely be the same temp as the rest of your house, so if your house gets cold in the winter (especially in the basement) be prepared to raise the heat a bit or add another pad if necessary.

It's also good for snakes to have "Daylight and Darkness." To simulate day and night and it helps to keep their metabolism and their Day/Night cycle in proper perspective. I know you are running lights. (I do too). But I'd suggest they are turned off at night. You mentioned a "Timer." Are both of your lights on the timer or just 1?

Your snake loves you lol.. That's a big viv, nicely done. Mine live the bin life so I can't let them see that or they'll be super jealous

Thanks everyone! Both lights are on a timer, so she gets a 12 hour dark period. And I'm habitutal about checking temps - we have a leopard gecko so it's become part of my daily spot checks.
