55g Aquarium w/ lighthood...How about a screen?

Perfect! I have access to a FREE 55g aquarium and stand. The problem is that I cannot find a screen-top for it. I do not want the original lighthood...Now what do I do? :crazy02:
I do have a roll of wire mesh in 1/4", (I made a shelf addition to my degus cage) I know this would work but to what would I anchor it, wood?

Where have you looked for a screen top? I have had no toupble finding a nice locking one for my 55 gallon (former aquarium). Most mom-and-pop shops will have one, I know that PetCo carries them, and PetLand should carry them (if youu have one around). I have not seen them at Petsmart, although I haven't checked.

I have found two different types:

One that fold in half long-ways, and another that folds up in thirds (the two ends fold up and leave a square in place in the middle).

I like the second one a lot. It works perfectly if you have divided your tank into 2 parts (for 2 snakes). This way you only have to open the lid to one snake at a time. It also gives you the option of opening an entire section of the tank to grab your snake, instead of having to wrench your arm toward the back corner.

I'm rambling and at work, so I hope this reads as well as I meant it to!

Sorry for the second post...

If you plan on using the wire mesh, I would suggest building a wooden frame that fits snugly around the tank, and attach the wire to that. I think that it would offer a bit more support.

I can't help you on how to anchor the lid on so that nothing escapes...but I'm sure someone will come along who can!

I made a homemade tank at my old job. 38 X 14 X 14 and had to make a cover for it. I used wood, 3/4" X 2", routered out a groove the same dimensions as the tank, mitered the corners and attached window screening with wood staples. It fits snuggly, and in 5 years the adult corn I have in the tank has never gotten it off. I'll see if I can get some pics.

I looked in Petsmart and Pets Supplies Plus. A Petco just opened 15 miles of here, maybe I'll look there for a screen with the double hinges. I like that idea.
