75 gallon tank too big??

My dad has fish that he'll be getting rid of soon and he's offered me the 75 gallon tank for free. He's getting rid of it because he's had bacterial bloom going on for quite some time now an he hasn't been able to correct it. He's told me about it and it doesn't seem to be anything that if cleaned properly would cause issues. If I did a super thorough disinfecting, would it be suitable for a forever home? I know some people say bigger tanks can freak out snakes, but Severus seems to love having space and exploring. He's a climber and a burrower, and I get a kick out of creating awesome spaces for him. If it was full of multiple hides, a few water dishes, branches, hammocks and vines, do you think he'd be alright? He's a little over a year, so I'm thinking the space won't stress him out as much as it would a baby. The only thing that would suck is the amount of bedding needed!

I don't see why not, as long as the bscterial thing is taken care of :)

Thanks :). He's explained it to me and it doesn't seem to be anything super scary. Pretty much caused by excess nutrients in the water that causes an excess of normal bacterial colonies to from. The fish are fine, he just can't get the water corrected and has given up. I don't plan on using it right away as I need to save up money to purchase all the stuff I'd need to fill it up, so I'll do multiple cleanings in the meantime just because I'm paranoid about introducing harmful things.

I'd love to have a viv that large, you could do so many cool hides and climbs. I live in an apartment so there's no way I could have room for such a, large tank. Good luck and post pics when you get it set up. Would enjoy seeing it.

It's a ways down the road if it happens, but if it does, they'll be pics!

I would just get a bag of pool shock fill it and put a tablespoon in it.That is going to be super strong. Let it sit for a few hours and drain it.Rinse it well and fill it again and let sit overnight. Drain it and it's totally sanitized.

Yeah, big tanks aren't a problem, just make sure there's enough clutter-driftwood, cardboard trash, plastic plants, etc-in the tank to hide. Judging from what you've said about providing your snake places to climb and hide, I don't think that will be a problem for you at all.

I cannot see any reason why a bigger viv would be a problem! I think any animal in captivity would welcome as much free space as possible :)

That's what I think every time someone tells me a vivarium is 'too big'.
In the wild, they are free to go wherever they want. As long as you are able to give the proper care to them they will be fine in whatever they are in.
Just large open spaces (like if you put a baby in a 75 g) won't be utilized. The snake will sit under it's hide, as it would in a 5g.

Thankfully my dad was able to save his fish and the tank and the bacterial bloom is gone! At the moment, Severus is happy in his 29 gallon. After looking at the 75 gallon, I think I'll most likely upgrade to a 55 gallon and stop there.

Thanks for all your comments everybody. :)

I have a MASSIVE 6ft/850g female in a 55g.. even that seems like too much room for her lol.

A 30g is probably more than enough :) Unless you want a nice show/deco tank.
