A bit off tonight....

:shrugs: Well,I had planned to feed my snake tonight, but thanks to the new beagle pup, things did'nt go as planned. It started when I found out that the dog got up stairs and recked the small plastic bowl I have been feeding him in.So,new larger bowl comming up.Around 7 when I went to feed him,,I had to do a search. He wasn't in his warm hide or his cool one.Instead I found him under his water dish, which was not an easy squess...
In his cool hide I did find out that he has been useing it for a place to "go" :eek1: ,AND I found the stinky remains of a regurged pinkie. All I can think is the last time I fed him, I gave him 2 pinkies, because they are starting to look small for him.He took them both down,no problem and not a HUGE bulge left in the wake.
Everything seemed OK, but I guess it was'nt :shrugs: .
I stopped and got him some fuzzies, which look just about right in size. Now throw in the new and MUCH larger feeding container, and a dose of tramma from that crazy pup,(tank is on the floor at the top of the stairs) and I had NO luck with getting him to eat.
This is the first time in about a month, that dinner did'nt go off as planned. One fuzzie in the trash :eek1:
Anyone think there could have been another reason for this turn of events, includeing the regurg ??.I guess I'll give him a day or 2 to get his appetite back.. :shrugs:

Could have just been stress. Are you sure your temps have been stable (not too cold)?

He needs to have at least 7-8 days or so after a regurge before feeding him again. They need this time to let the "good guys" build back up in their stomach. If they eat again too soon without the proper stuff in their gut to digest, they will just regurge again because the food just sits in there and rots, when it can't be digested. Give him the needed 7-8 days after a regurge. Also, if he ever refuses a meal, give him several days (4-5) before you offer again. Offering food too often can just condition them to refuse it everytime.
Also, food size after a regurge is important. Feed something much smaller than normal for the first time or couple of times following a regurge. This makes it easier on the recovering digestive system. Try just a pinky head or half a pinky (cut it lengthwise while still frozen). If he keeps it down, try another small item the next time. Slowly work your way back up to regular sized prey items.

Double check your temps and try to give him some peace and quite to recover. Good luck with your next feeding attempt!:)

OK,,I'll give him some extra time.I would have to say the regurged pinkie was hidden fir a day or more like 2 days.Temps are usually good. His warm end hide runs in the 85 to 88 range,so I don't think there is a problem there.
I guess I'll give him till the end of the weekend, and then try again.

I would turn down your warm side to 82, no higher than 85. Too high a temp can cause regurge. My only regurge I gave 7-10 days before trying to feed. I also fed a smaller than normal food item for at least 3 feedings before going back up in size.

I would reccomend getting that tank to a better spot. " Being on the floor at the top of stairs " in other words in a high traffic area with a puppy running around is just too much constant activity for a young snake. Stress has bad recourses on snakes. I think It is important you find him a more comforting place to reside in your home.

best wishes

Thanks girls for the suggestions.I will look into making adjustments on both suggestions.
I do believe I figured out why he was a bit off on Thursday,at least one reason.I woke up Friday morning to a fresh shed in the tank. Some time in the night he took care of it.Pretty cool looking :grin01: ...So,now I will give him a bit more time before I offer him a meal.
Should I offer two small pinkies or one ?.Maybe just one slightly larger pinkie,,or play it safe ??.
I will say,,he does LOVE his warm side cave.I have a coconut bark substrate, but under the warm hide is almost like a "nest" of aspen. He curls up on top of it.When I look to find him,,he looks like a small bird all curled up in the middle of his "nest".Looking VERY comfee.I will make sure his temp inside it stays to 84 degrees.
Thanks again

Play it safe, always. If you don't, you'll likely regret it later. I'd wait the full 10 days and just offer a small pinkie if I were you, and if he keeps it down keep him on 1 pinkie a week for a couple more feeds, before slowly moving back up. Best of luck. :)
